The problem of the reconstruction of an old passive margin from the study of land outcrops is the deformation of the margin series, due to their tectonic emplacement on the continental domains. In the Othrys massif, in Greece, the witnesses of a Tethysian margin (Maliac Ocean) are relatively well preserved within syn-obduction sheets thrust during the Jurassic period. In this massif, the syn-obduction sheets are numerous: 3 ophiolitic units and 6 units coming from the margin. The stacking of the sheets is regular: the nappes having series deposited at great depth (distal) always cover series of shallower depth (proximal). It is thus possible to reconstitute the West-Maliac margin (W-Maliac) in a fairly complete and relatively reliable way.Previous works, in particular by the authors of this work, made it possible to establish the broad outlines of this reconstruction. New results on the Othrys series, and data obtained on current margins, allow us to propose comparisons with the main types of margin recognized at current oceans: the W-Maliac margin is fairly similar to the “poor-magma” margins also qualified as “hyper-extended margin”.We also present an analysis of the syn-rift (Middle Triassic) deformation mechanisms of the W-Maliac margin, namely: a ) the different successive deformation phases: i) a diffuse deformation with development of normal faults in the upper continental crust (stretching); ii) a more localized deformation (thinning) responsible for the distal margin; iii) a possible (but unproven) sub-continental mantle exhumation; iv) the oceanic accretion (end of the Rifting) from the Upper Anisian.b ) the different domains resulting from these deformations: i) the “Necking domain” transition between the thick crust of the main continental domain (approx. 30 km) and the thin-crust distal margin (approx. 10 km); ii) the distal margin linked to a "detachment fault"; iii) a “distal block”, a transient relief, located at the end of the margin in contact with the oceanic crust or locally with exhumed serpentinites (?). When the hyper-extension gives rise to exhumated hydrated mantle within the distal margin, such “distal blocks” could be at the origin of elements defined as "Extensional Allochtons".

The obduction, thrusting of the oceanic lithosphere on the continental crust, at the origin of ophiolites, has been defined following the plate tectonics revolution. Initially, the analyzes focused on the petrography and geochemistry of the ophiolites (e.g. Vourinos in Greece, Troodos in Cyprus, Semail in Oman). Our study mainly concerns a sector of the Hellenides, the Othris massif, where can be observed a complete ophiolitic system made of a pile of thrust sheets emplaced during the obduction of the Tethyan Maliac Ocean. The presence of Cretaceous layers covering unconformably these thrust sheets, allows to attribute these latter, without any doubt, to the Middle-Late Jurassic obduction process. The structural device comprises three ophiolitic nappes overlying five other nappes corresponding to the deformation of the continental margin under these ophiolitic nappes. In this massif, the Middle Jurassic ophiolites (Mega Isoma and Metalleion) have characteristics partly comparable (location, petrographic characteristics, age) to those of the Vourinos-North Pindos ophiolites supposed to be born in the upper plate of a subduction zone. On the other hand, we were able to highlight in Othris, some original nappes: i) an ophiolitic nappe made of Triassic pillow-lavas (Fourka unit, with MORB lavas) witness of the initial period of the ocean; ii) nappes coming from the distal margin, allowing this margin to be reconstructed fairly precisely. Thanks to the analysis of these different nappes we have been able to determine or to precise some characteristics of the obduction process: i) the tectonic emplacement of a thrust sheet (Fourka) coming from the lower diving plate in the subduction zone (and not to the upper plate as the other ophiolitic nappes); ii) the genesis of some nappes from Triassic normal listric faults linked to the rifting event (positive tectonic inversion process); iii) the characteristics of emplacement of the nappes on the continental domain by analyzing the mélanges born in front of the syn-obduction nappes. Two late-obduction events have been also studied: the genesis of a foreland basin and the development of tectonic windows within the thrust sheets pile.
