The Mining History Centre, created in 1982 at the impetus of the nationalised mining company, opened to the public in 1984. Its aim is to conserve and promote the Nord-Pas de Calais’s mining culture to learn about three centuries of mining in the area. Rich in nearly 15,000 items, the collections of the Mining History Centre are made up of a wide variety of items which have for common denominator of being linked to the world of mining and coming, for the most part, from the Nord-Pas-de-Calais’s mining basin. Among these, fossils are present, in particular thanks to the constitution, from 1977, of a geology collection which makes possible to better know the flora present in our region in the Carboniferous. In 2021, this collection, known as the "historical collection of geology", was the subject of a checking carried out with the support of the Direction régionale des Affaires culturelles Hauts-de-France. In addition to allowing the rediscovery of this collection, this meticulous inventorying work has made it possible to offer the specimens of this collection better conservation conditions and better value, both to the general public and to specialists in the field.

Fossil woods from the Kimmeridgien and the Tithonian (Uppermost Jurassic) of the Pas-de-Calais have been studied. They come mainly from the Grès de la Crèche and one from the Argiles de la Crèche. Woods from the Grès de la Crèche are all silicified, in an unusual way. These woods have been identified as belonging to the genera Protocupressinoxylon, Protopodocarpoxylon and Xenoxylon. These last two genera had not previously been mentioned in the French Tithonian. Climatic factors could explain the relatively high generic diversity of fossil wood from this stage.
