This article proposes to reconsider the myth of Helen in the 15th and 16th centuries by examining, through a few examples, the ways in which the myth was represented. The chosen approach, crossing art history and literature, highlights its narrative, symbolic and artistic functions and sheds light on its significance. The aim is to explore the re-semantisation of the heroine, who, while remaining an exemplar of the mythological repertoire, is gradually becoming an independent object of art.

By focusing on the characters of Europa and Helen, this article examines the medieval reception and interpretation of the narrative theme of the abduction. In manuscripts, literary works, and precious objects the episodes of the abduction are staged in multiple ways. Thus, it is possible to describe the development of diversified interpretations and new iconicities linked to these two figures, paving the way to the Renaissance canons.
