L’étude comparée de la source et de sa traduction montre une très forte amplification par Wace de l’épisode arthurien : il s’y livre notamment à une violente diatribe contre les jeux de hasard ; celle-ci détonne avec l’atmosphère chevaleresque et courtoise qui se manifeste dans les jeux sportifs, en contraste avec l’issue tragique d’autres jeux présents dans l’Historia regum Britanniae et dans les romans d’Antiquité, où ils dégénèrent fréquemment en rixe ou en meurtre. Two episodes from the Roman de Brut and its source, the Historia regum Britanniae, describe games – sporting and intellectual – which saw the young people of the Breton kingdom compete against each other, under the reign of Cassibellan and under that of Arthur.
