From the monkey motif present in all the versions of the cycle of Othovian, associated with the character of Florent, this contribution proposes to wonder about the narrative and symbolic role of an animal whose connotations are often negative (association with the devil). The course takes into account the Roman d’Othovien, the song of gesture Florent and Octavien, the setting in prose and the print (Florent and Lyon), as well as the images illustrating the texts. We will show how the monkey can become a sign of the initiatory journey of the young Florent, who through trials and despite his education shows his true nature, that of a young noble.

In this study we attempt at first to clarify to which literary genre should be ascribed the poem Othevien, whose metrical form, the octosyllabic rhyming couplets, visibly contrasts with the epic style and contents. Then, we analyze the way in which Othevien’s metrical form has been transformed first in the dodecasyllabic laisses rewriting Florent et Octavian, then in the prose Florent et Lyon.

The Romance of Othevien is an unicum which is dated from the middle of the thirteenth century. It is in the collection of manuscripts of the Bodleian library in Oxford. This epic poem had a great success ; indeed we know a huge rewriting in alexandrines and several late proses in middle french language. But there is also two important rewritings in middle English which influenced many other medieval texts in this language especially.

Le livre des haulx fais et vaillances de l’empereur Othovyen was written in 1454 at the court of Burgundy during the reign of Philip the Good, for Jean V of Crequy. It is a vast prose rewriting which contains the rewritings of the alexandrine versions of Florent et Octavien and of Florence de Rome. The author of the Burgundian version of the Othovyen cycle insists more than once on violence and cruelty, particularly in the description of fight scenes and in the stories of aggressions against the beautiful Florence of Rome. This paper shows how violence and cruelty ensure the unity of tone and of register in the imposing epic prose cycle, which is built on the narrative both of feats of arms and of pathetic adventures.

The Othevien’s cycle includes four texts in prose and verse. The plot relates to the saga of the Roman emperor, Othevien, who banished his family during the course of events. The consequence of this action is the family’s separation and the development of individual undertakings of its members. In spite of the title of the octosyllabic version, the main character of the story is one of the emperor’s children, Florent, who has been brought up by a rich, Parisian bourgeois, named Climent. The clash between the noble origins of the young boy and the new, inconvenient reality where he lives generate a series of humiliating misadventures that comes to an end only when the hero becomes able to demonstrate his prowess by defeating the fearsome King of the Giants. My contribution is focussed on the evolution of Florent’s character and on the deep roots of his maladjustment into the villain’s society.

Abstract : This paper aims to study the character of Clément, the vilain or the nobile bourgoys who buys and adopts the young Florent. By a close analysis of the five sequences involving Clément, considered in each of the four versions of the geste d’Othovien, we will see that the role of this character is not only comical, being also a figure of paternal love and an adjuvant for the hero. Thus we will also contribute, as we hope, to the question of the links between the four versions and of the Roman d’Othevien’s genre, between chanson de geste and roman in octosyllabic couplets.

The Chanson de Florence de Rome, of which we have kept two complete manuscripts, has been in the 15th century attached to the cycle of Othovyen, in a reworking in dodecasyllabic verses and a prose setting. The study of the episode of the "moniage" of the queen allows to compare the versions, in order to reveal elements of parentage or originality.

This article reconsiders several points of contact between the Middle English tail-rhyme romances Octavian (in its northern as well as its southern versions) and Le Bone Florence of Rome, which survive in fifteenth-century manuscripts. By analysing their literary and textual relations and comparing them with their French sources and the latter’s adaptations, it offers a glimpse of an epic cycle that may have existed in England in a period predating the witnesses that have come down to us.
