This article questions the supposed rivalry between Marguerite Duras and Simone de Beauvoir, often asserted without being proven, without seeking to bring together at all costs and belatedly two authors whose visions of activism and literature are widely divergent. The ambition is more modest; to examine their conception of feminism between 1970 and 1985, in three stages: by questioning Duras's rejection of the feminist label that Beauvoir had long accepted, and by showing the extent to which the MLF years led both authors to develop a new way of thinking about couples, accompanied by a different reflection on single-sex activism.

More than feminism, it is the question of the feminine, of its relationship to the masculine, that interests Marguerite Duras. Several of her texts, particularly those from the 1980s, bear witness to complex, sometimes violent, relationships between men and women. Paradoxically, it is through this violence, from the gap between beings, that the attempt to love can be renewed.

By comparing Duras’s public discourse on feminism with what can be written about women and the feminine in her work, this article analyses how Duras’s feminism grapples with the very notion of thought, preferring the turbulence of fantasy and the exercise of paradox to the intellectual framework. Thus, both women and feminism can only be articulated in Duras’s work through the concealed power of language.

The article offers an analysis of Marguerite Duras' portrayals of female beauty. While the sacralization of female characters' bodies contributes to their objectification, and Duras does not stray far from the canons of the time (most often describing young, thin white women with iconic blue eyes), such an emphasis on their beauty also involves a certain subversion of literary and aesthetic codes. Beauty alone evokes a whole intertext; its mere mention is so laden with common meanings that it is recognized as a clear, unambiguous signal and, a priori, does not need to be described. By describing it nonetheless, and with such insistence, at a time when the literary depiction of faces was tending to be abandoned, Duras pushes the norm to the extreme and takes it to the limits of strangeness.

This article will focus on the act of speaking about oneself and the staging of speech in Les Parleuses by Marguerite Duras and Xavière Gauthier. Indeed, the feminist project underlying this book set out to study women’s writing, not from an essentialist perspective but based on the idea that women’s writing is necessarily shaped by a particular form of social conditioning, particularly in the writing of the self. Through Duras’s words, Les Parleuses construct a discursive space in which two women “try to speak, move forward, lose their way, find their way again, lose their way once more but keep moving forward, without a model, without a plan, without caution and, perhaps for the first time, without fear of the CENSOR”. What does it mean to “speak” and to become a “parleuse” when one enters a single-sex space ? Are Duras and Gauthier engaging in autofiction when they discuss writing, and what do Les Parleuses reveal about writing in the first person ?This article aims to question the action of speaking in Les Parleuses by Marguerite Duras and Xavière Gauthier. The book is born from a feminist starting point : questioning women’s writing, not as an essentialist feminist but as a feminist conscious of the social background that many minority face when they start writing and especially writing about themselves. Les Parleuses is, according to Duras, a place where both women “try and talk, go forward, lose themselves, find themselves, lose themselves again, but keep going forward, with no model, plan or care, and, maybe for the first time, with no fear of the CENSOR”. What does “speaking” mean while they do it in a non-mixed space ? How does speaking about writing come to speaking about self-writing ? What can Les Parleuses explain about writing about the self ?

This article reads the “feminine” in Marguerite Duras’ work not as a subject, but as a writing position. It is grounded in a threefold analytical framework: embodied memory, fluvial time, and poetics of voice. Combining close reading attentive to rhythm and syntax with historical and discursive framing, it shows how fragments, blanks, and repetitions displace the event and institute an ethics of the trace. From Un barrage contre le Pacifique to La Douleur, and from Moderato cantabile to India Song and La Femme du Gange, spectrality defines an intermittent and resistant mode of the subject’s appearance, as well as a politics of withdrawal opposed to spectacularizing testimony.

This article examines the cinema of Marguerite Duras through the concept of a feminist aesthetic posture, understood as the inscription of the political within filmic form. Drawing on the work of Laura Mulvey, Teresa de Lauretis, and Luce Irigaray, it offers a focused analysis of selected excerpts from Nathalie Granger, La Femme du Gange, Baxter, Vera Baxter, and Agatha et les lectures illimitées. The study demonstrates how voice/image dissociation, narrative suspension, the structuring of duration, and the refusal of closure operate as formal strategies that displace dominant regimes of representation. These aesthetic choices reconfigure the conditions of enunciation and the processes of female subjectivation. Duras’s cinema thus emerges as a critical space in which aesthetics functions as a practice of transforming symbolic frameworks.

Imagined Feminist Cartographies

This article rereads Un barrage contre le Pacifique through the lens of Leslie Kern’s Feminist City to acknowledge the novel’s urban and colonial spatial dynamics. By bringing contemporary feminist geography into dialogue with Marguerite Duras’s work, this essay examines how Suzanne’s movements through the segregated city of Saigon expose the racial, gendered, and class hierarchies structuring colonial space. The “white city” emerges as both material and symbolic architecture, regulating bodies through surveillance, mobility, and desire. By mapping Suzanne’s errance as an embodied negotiation of power, this study argues that Duras constructs space not as backdrop but as an active force shaping subjectivity and colonial modernity.

The Wandering Woman

This article argues that the wandering women in Marguerite Duras’s Un barrage contre le Pacifique, Le Ravissement de Lol V. Stein, and Le Vice-Consul reveal an ambivalent feminism shaped by postwar capitalist time, social exclusion, and masculine attempts at narrative control. Focusing on movement and the body, it shows how women’s wandering signals non-belonging and disrupts the efficient, purposeful temporality imposed on both public life and domestic femininity during the trente glorieuses. Wandering emerges as a tension-filled space—both pathologized and potentially subversive—through which women unsettle the spatial, temporal, and narrative norms that seek to contain them.

Duras’s feminism, which is omnipresent in her works and public statements but never explicitly conceptualized, manifests itself through a self-assured madness and a distrust of language, taking on various discursive forms. This multifaceted feminism has exerted a considerable influence on French-speaking Belgian women writers, who often cite Duras as an inspiration, either implicitly or explicitly. Through four key examples, this article aims to demonstrate that at the heart of Duras’s feminist legacy lies the ethical and aesthetic issue of human wilderness state.

This article offers an analysis of Marguerite Duras’s rewriting of the novel Le Vice-consul (1966), which she developed into a “texte théâtre film”, a radio play, two songs and two films. A stylistic study of this rewriting process reveals a mechanism of creation through distancing, present at both macrostructural and microstructural level. The impossibility of knowing and speaking, fundamental themes in Duras’s writing, increase throughout the rewriting process (from work to work) and are linked to a disembodiment and unmasking of the illusion of reality. This very act of distancing, however, forges a new vision that is larger, universal, timeless and associated with a new language.

This text revisits the project to translate five works by Marguerite Duras into Armenian, which goes far beyond the editorial challenge to become a truly human and artistic experience. Through a collective effort based on oral communication, listening and reading aloud, the translators sought to preserve the musicality, silences and “strangeness” of Duras’ style in L'Amante anglaise, Moderato cantabile, La Douleur, La Vie matérielle and Un barrage contre le Pacifique. The article shows how literary translation, far from being a simple linguistic transposition, requires a physical and cultural sensitivity capable of rendering the non-verbal and socio-cultural anchoring of the text. It also highlights the specificities of the Armenian context—linguistic, editorial, and historical. Armenian, Interculturality, Musicality, Orality, Translation
