En effet, le traitement radical que Straub et Huillet imposèrent à la fois au texte et au film a quelque chose de subversif, probable répercussion de Mai 68, montrant la possibilité d’explorer autrement le cinéma sans renoncer au métier d’écrivain. Contrairement à Jean-Luc Godard, qui se méfiait de l’hégémonie du texte dans le film, Duras, à l’instar de Straub et Huillet, souligne la métamorphose du texte en voix, résultat d’un déplacement au sein de l’espace cinématographique, que tous ces cinéastes élaborent chacun à sa manière.
