In Le Square (stage version, 1965), far from giving way to dialogue, the narrative persists, tending towards the hypotyposis that transcends Duras’s later plays: a duo commune within the same evocation. But the novelist’s first play has the singularity of counteracting her movement towards hypotyposis. The Young Girl, a maid, is wary of the stereotypes that seem to taint the mythologized account given by the Man, a sales representative, of a trip to a foreign city with a seaside zoo. When it is her turn, this time it is in the mode of a murder fantasy against the very old woman in her charge. But the Man disturbs the purity of the fantasy by inciting her to act, or by putting forward several hypotheses that would improve her daily life. So, instead of sharing their fantasies, they counter each other’s hypotyposis, which thus exposes the most intimate aspects of their existence. It’s a source of tension in this static drama, and an opening up of meaning in this closed-door setting: the weakening-strengthening of a shareable-unshareable vision.

This article is a basis for dramaturgical analysis of Marguerite Duras's Agatha. It hypothesizes a kinship between classical hypotyposis and the play's descriptive narrative. From this point, it examines how the rhetorical and stylistic characteristics of hypotyposis help to shed light on Durassian invisibility and unspeakability. Step by step, the article then deciphers some of the play's key lines to provide an interpreter with the tools she needs to perform them. From this analysis emerge the notions of “optical body” and “epiphanic body”, composed and shared by all the bodies co-present in the theater venue.

Until recent years, with rare exceptions, specialists in theater studies or drama literature neglected sound archives, even when working on theater for “voice” or “listening”. In the case of L’Amante anglaise, the audio recording of Claude Régy’s premiere (in December 1968, in the Salle Gémier of the TNP in the Palais de Chaillot), which Michael Lonsdale assured us had been made, was only rediscovered in 2010 (there are in fact two recordings, dated February 22d and December 21st, 1969). Despite the general difficulty of hearing the past properly and, in the case of such a commented work, resisting the “official” history that shapes our expectations of what we have to listen to—in this case, the story of an almost legendary mutual inspiration between author and director—hearing these recordings revealed the intervention of another poetic subject, plural and decisive. By methodically listening to three excerpts, readers can hear it for themselves.

The following discussion compares Éric Vigner’s 1993 staging of La Pluie d’été with Marguerite Duras’s model of theater as reading. A specific sentence from Ernesto, the central character in Duras’s novel, will serve as a starting point for testing the following hypothesis: the words “lire comme ça ou autrement” constitute a theatrical manifesto for Duras as much as for Vigner. An aesthetic and dramaturgical manifesto to be scrutinized in two steps. First: reading. This means placing the theatrical gesture under the aegis of reading, and we’ll see how Vigner makes Duras’s book as an object the structuring element of his staging. Once this space of the book has been established, we will study how Vigner’s aesthetics is based on a logic of interruption that allows the reader, as well as the spectator of La Pluie d’été, to exercise his freedom. In these gaps between words and bodies, something of Duras’s own gesture of writing becomes perceptible, a scene of writing that can be read like this, or otherwise.

Published in 1985, La Douleur was brought to the stage in 2008 by French actress Dominique Blanc, under the watchful eye of French director Patrice Chéreau and choreographer Thierry Thieû-Niang. Fourteen years later, the actress is reviving this pared-down, one-woman show, with the complicity of the choreographer, as a tribute to the memory and work of Chéreau, who passed away in 2013. How did this project come about, and what are the challenges posed by a type of theater designed to be “read” rather than “performed”? Beyond the homage to Patrice Chéreau, why should this creation be revived in 2022? These are the three highlights of our article.

Christine Letailleur explains the dramaturgical issues that inspired her 2020 staging of L'Éden cinéma, an adaptation of the novel Un barrage contre le Pacifique. More specifically, she discusses the importance of the temporal montage that structures the work, the influence of cinema and the actors' performance, between acted scenes and narratives in the past tense.

In 1965, Lacan’s discovery of Le Ravissement de Lol V. Stein (The Rapture of Lol V. Stein) confirmed what he had been theorizing. He then moved away from the structural and linguistic paradigm towards a modeling by mathemes, i.e. by operative devices. Duras’s text provides him with an essential point of support, and Lacanian theorizing in turn sheds light on how the scene works in Duras’ novel. Le Ravissement apparently unfolds from the traumatic opening scene of the Ball, and the “word-hole” that designates it, but it is the repeated screen scene that provides the substance of the novel. The hotel window where Jacques Hold meets Tatiana is a tableau for Lol, but an empty tableau, like a screen, through the interposed silhouette of Tatiana: all the other scenes are organized on this empty-scene model. What is at stake in the scene is not the interaction of two characters under the gaze of a third party, but the repetition of the lookout, which makes the subject’s schize operate, at the expense of its very substance. The revolution that Duras introduces into the scenic set-up proceeds from this hollowing-out.

In Les Petits Chevaux de Tarquinia, serious dialogues, friendly conversations and quarrels follow one another. Tones and themes mingle, humilis and sublimis, comic and tragic. Talking about anything and everything allows the characters to escape their loneliness and existential anguish, while the author, through the immediacy and authenticity of direct speech, pays tribute to the drive of life. The distribution of speaking time, the participation in exchanges and their location allow us to hierarchize the characters, united around Ludi and his paradoxical love for this hellish place, La Boca. The four chapters seem like four acts without drama, but with words, with the path of bodies negotiating the sharing of space, and that of glances. For the most part, the text consists in a succession of isochronous dialogue scenes, punctuated by rare summaries. 1953 was undoubtedly the year Duras launched her offensive against narrative and her pressing desire to write for the stage. She began to reflect on speech and the ways in which it is expressed, as well as she starts questioning genres, leading eventually to the meta-category of text.

Scene set-up in Marguerite Duras' novels takes many different forms. It may resemble to stage writing, as in Le Square, where there is no change between the novel version of the text and the theatrical version. The scene may also be set in absentia, meaning the main protagonists are absent from it and experience it only with an aborted perceptive awareness. This initial dramatic scene is perpetually reconstructed by language, allowing the "truth" about it to escape. This takes the form of a conversational scene. This article examines the various scenes in Durassian novels, such as scenes of expectation, confidence, disputes, erotic scenes, scenes of declarations of love, meeting scenes and social scenes, in their relationship with the forms of dialogue (dilogue, trilogue and polylogue) between the characters, from the perspective of narrative pragmatics, in order to bring out their use in text and their role in the economy of the novels. These are generally dealt with by hijacking generic codes and readers' expectations.

This article analyses the central role of an intriguing image in the poetics of Moderato cantabile: that of feigned death. It first demonstrates that this image lies at the heart of the tension that the novel establishes between scenes (initial and final, in particular), dialogue and narrative, but also between urgency and passivity. Then, by reinserting the work in the context of the novelistic experimentations of the 1950s and 1960s, it examines what makes feigned death the image of a contradictory dynamic through which the lack of means is reversed and becomes a poetic means, a means of taking charge of the unnamable.

This paper aims at questioning the cinematography of writing used in Marguerite Duras’ L’Amant (The Lover) and Annie Ernaux’s Mémoire de fille (A Girl’s Story). It argues that this writing encompasses a cinematographic hypotyposis inspired by the visual dimension of the scene, a new form of literary realism based on an aesthetics of (de)montage, and a neutral and uncluttered style that mimics the camera’s objective eye. Ultimately, the paper asserts that this cinematographic writing links its poetics to a political dimension as it reveals a female agency that enables both writers to stage themselves, thereby achieving a reappropriation of the self through the act of writing.

This article presents a study of the genetic file of the screenplay for Moderato cantabile, written by Marguerite Duras and Gérard Jarlot for Peter Brook’s adaptation. Unanimously criticized, this film is both an initiation and a breakthrough in the history of Duras's relationship with cinema. Moderato cantabile was the first (and last) time Duras wrote the screenplay for a film adapted from one of her novels without directing it. Working with Brook was, in this regard, an important turning point, which could be formulated as follows: the 1960 adaptation was the one Duras liked least and the one that most prompted her to go behind the camera. Taking an interest in Peter Brook's film as a "false adaptation" therefore gives us a better understanding of what a "true adaptation" would be in Duras's eyes, which, at a time when cinema is thought of through adaptation, offers a way of looking at the beginnings of Durassian cinema.

Touraine appears in several of Marguerite Duras's works, particularly in the novel L'Amant and in the short stories collection Des journées entières dans les arbres. We will look at the many episodes in the life of the Donnadieu family that took place there and we will see how Marguerite Duras freely drew inspiration from them in her work, willingly mixing memory and imagination. Marguerite was the first to come to Touraine, at the castle of Cangé in Saint-Avertin, when the French government retreated to Tours in June 1940. But it was her mother who chose this region to buy her son a house in 1949. She wanted a healthy life for him, away from the dangerous temptations of the city. This property located in Nazelles-Négron, had never been identified until now and had often been confused with the one Marie bought to live in, when she came back from Indochina, a few kilometers from her son, in Onzain. The short film festival in Tours was also an opportunity for the author to return to these familiar surroundings.
