      <title>The Space Where Language Fails</title>
      <link>https://www.peren-revues.fr/cahiersmargueriteduras/157</link>
<description>Explaining her 1963 adaptation of William Gibson’s The Miracle Worker, Marguerite Duras writes that through her work on the play she wishes to explore “the development of a situation that cannot at any moment be resolved by language.” While Duras works to “decongest” the text, her adaptation problematizes the very act of translation as one that is always doomed to fail to express, blinding the audience to the nuances and meanings of the word. Yet Duras’s text also valorizes the experience of blindness and mutism as a liminal space (absent of language/sight), which the writer likens to a womb. In shifting the focus of the play off of the learning of spelling and vocabulary and onto the very discovery of language, Duras transforms William Gibson’s original work into a probing of its own medium of transmission. </description>
