There is only one Durassian landscape, that of writing. The divide between the territories of Indochina and those of Lot-et-Garonne needs to be rethought. The father's place also contains primitive scenes that undoubtedly nourished the soil from which Marguerite Duras's writing was born. Memories of the Sud-Ouest are the setting for the writer's first two novels, and a fundamental image emerges from these pages: that of the family, of brutal ties, of silence, through the story of Brune the cow. A metaphor for an imaginary world in gestation, stricken with the seal of death, the cow towers over the work like an emblem, a symbolic foundation that unites the memory of the Sud-Ouest with that of an irreparable gap, that unites the dead. Long before the Pacific, it is certainly in the Dordogne that we must look for Marguerite before Duras.

In Les Parleuses, Duras speaks of a sharp rupture between her first novels and those written after Moderato cantabile. From the 1950’s onwards, Durassian writing indeed changes profoundly, as it happens to other novelists at the same period. Above all, the stylistic upheavals are greater regarding specially the dialogues, in the broadest sense of the term (dialogue between narrative instances, dialogue between texts). The linguistic politeness was integrated to the exchanges between characters and the triads became the fundamental structure of their interactions. However, the rupture is less harsh than Marguerite Duras led us to believe.

The following discussion compares Éric Vigner’s 1993 staging of La Pluie d’été with Marguerite Duras’s model of theater as reading. A specific sentence from Ernesto, the central character in Duras’s novel, will serve as a starting point for testing the following hypothesis: the words “lire comme ça ou autrement” constitute a theatrical manifesto for Duras as much as for Vigner. An aesthetic and dramaturgical manifesto to be scrutinized in two steps. First: reading. This means placing the theatrical gesture under the aegis of reading, and we’ll see how Vigner makes Duras’s book as an object the structuring element of his staging. Once this space of the book has been established, we will study how Vigner’s aesthetics is based on a logic of interruption that allows the reader, as well as the spectator of La Pluie d’été, to exercise his freedom. In these gaps between words and bodies, something of Duras’s own gesture of writing becomes perceptible, a scene of writing that can be read like this, or otherwise.

Who’s Afraid of Marguerite Duras?

Occasionally, two singular literary universes of different natures, geographical origins and eras, cross paths and meet. Some of these encounters may seem natural, others more surprising, like that of Virginia Woolf and Marguerite Duras. To mention the name of the former, from a comparative perspective, is to hear the echo of Nathalie Sarraute's voice. To mention the name of the second, in the same way, is to perceive one and the same voice, that of the author of The Rapture of Lol V. Stein. However, a network of subterranean correspondences relating to the conception of writing and its actualisation within the fabric of the novel introduces a Woolfian rift into the heart of Duras' independent monolith.
