Marguerite Duras has always emphasized the importance of places in the genesis of her works and characters. Little Horses of Tarquinia is no exception, the text confirms with incredible force the primordial role of space and landscape in Duras’ writing. In this novel about a holiday in Italy, the heat function as a character in its own right, influencing the protagonists’ moods, predisposing them to boredom and idleness. The impact of the meteorological weather even extends to chronological time, imposing a cyclicality that influences the novel’s structure. Duras creates an oppressive setting using a Mediterranean landscape twice ablaze by the heatwave and by an explosion that kills a young deminer in a nearby mountain. If the weight of the place is difficult to bear, the characters react by scaping to imaginary places and travel projections, which results in internal landscapes being combined to the external landscape, aiding the protagonists to briefly escape their discomfort.

Duras has a long-standing passion for cinema. When she talks about cinema, with rare exceptions, she only discusses Western cinema, mostly French, Italian and Anglo-Saxon. The positions she takes on Anglo-Saxon cinema are somewhat different from the rest, in that the examples she mentions are combined with a global discourse that attempts to define what we would now call mainstream cinema. The criticisms vary over the course of her career, depending on factual events or sudden disaffection, but some constants can be identified, revealing a singular imagination that explores the relationship between film industry and aesthetic purpose of filmmaking. Duras as a writer and filmmaker constantly shifts the aesthetic judgement to the level of ideological judgement, attacking for instance the reception of Anglo-Saxon cinema. By comparing the extreme diversity of her statements, this article aims to understand what Anglo-Saxon cinema means, in the Durassian imagination.
