This study proposes a non-exhaustive typology of the polymorphous presence of the Anglo-Saxon world in Duras's works, by focusing on three main aspects: the role of the Anglo-Saxon world in the characterisation of places and characters and creation of a fictional world; the influence of the Anglo-American art on Duras's work, especially through intertextuality; and the presence of the English language, that inscribes the Anglo-Saxon world in Duras' language itself. These elements contribute fully to the strangeness of Duras's work, made of « métissage » and hybridity.

This diachronic approach to the work of Marguerite Duras aims to give an account of her relationship with the Anglo-Saxon world, using Michael Edwards notion of “étrangèreté”. Drawing on Duras novels, theater, journalistic work and interviews, this article examines the ambivalence of her relationship with American culture and the English language, as well as to referentiality, often called into question by the poetic and the “romanesque”. Finally, this article aims to show the extent to which the Anglo-Saxon world provides Duras work with the powerful driving force of the “romanesque”.

English words intrude from time to time into the writing of Marguerite Duras, who is not a bilingual writer. The intrusion of the anglicism seems more mysterious in that it often refers, whether explicitly or not, to aquatic elements, one of the writer's unavoidable leitmotifs. In addition to the phonetic advantage of its large number of monosyllabic words, the anglicism employed by Duras is as much a biographical bearer, alluding to the colonial context of the Indian cycle and to the author's Indochinese childhood, as it is the embodiment of a Mallarmé's linguistic reverie that suggests an elsewhere, another possibility than the French language stuck in the "word-hole". This reverie corresponds precisely to the poetics of water, characterised by vagueness, strangeness, and intangibility, which is transformed towards the end of the writer's career into a 'current writing' - the fruit of her long stylistic research.

For Duras, whisky goes hand in hand with sea voyage (Le Marin de Gibraltar, Emily L.) and her imaginary worlds. But it can also be worldly (Le Vice-consul). As an American liquor, it is a reference to the Anglo-Saxon world and takes readers on a literary voyage, referring in Le Marin de Gibraltar to Hemingway, the inspiration for Duras's early novels.

The Space Where Language Fails

Explaining her 1963 adaptation of William Gibson’s The Miracle Worker, Marguerite Duras writes that through her work on the play she wishes to explore “the development of a situation that cannot at any moment be resolved by language.” While Duras works to “decongest” the text, her adaptation problematizes the very act of translation as one that is always doomed to fail to express, blinding the audience to the nuances and meanings of the word. Yet Duras’s text also valorizes the experience of blindness and mutism as a liminal space (absent of language/sight), which the writer likens to a womb. In shifting the focus of the play off of the learning of spelling and vocabulary and onto the very discovery of language, Duras transforms William Gibson’s original work into a probing of its own medium of transmission.

On several occasions, Marguerite Duras has adapted texts by Henry James for the stage. What's more, an explicit reference to the author of The Beast in the Jungle can be found in Emily L., in which the narrator declares to her companion: "You will possess the knowledge of history, like Henry James's heroes, when it is over". Why did Marguerite Duras fall for this Europeanised American? Was it because he knew how to gather words from an ever-changing world? Did she find in him inspiration and a similarity in the way she wrote, or did she share with him the same relationship to time, reflected in the imminence of something that is always too late? Since there are so many Jamesian registers, might we not hypothesise that James played an essential role for Duras in at least three areas: an existential one, relating to the love affairs she described as "frightening"; a theoretical one, concerning the emergence of writing; and a more practical one, dealing with the particular construction of Jamesian short stories, making possible different passages: from one language to another, from one genre to another, from one interpretation to another. In a word, and on this subject, wasn't James, before his time, a practitioner of transgenericity?

Who’s Afraid of Marguerite Duras?

Occasionally, two singular literary universes of different natures, geographical origins and eras, cross paths and meet. Some of these encounters may seem natural, others more surprising, like that of Virginia Woolf and Marguerite Duras. To mention the name of the former, from a comparative perspective, is to hear the echo of Nathalie Sarraute's voice. To mention the name of the second, in the same way, is to perceive one and the same voice, that of the author of The Rapture of Lol V. Stein. However, a network of subterranean correspondences relating to the conception of writing and its actualisation within the fabric of the novel introduces a Woolfian rift into the heart of Duras' independent monolith.

Duras has a long-standing passion for cinema. When she talks about cinema, with rare exceptions, she only discusses Western cinema, mostly French, Italian and Anglo-Saxon. The positions she takes on Anglo-Saxon cinema are somewhat different from the rest, in that the examples she mentions are combined with a global discourse that attempts to define what we would now call mainstream cinema. The criticisms vary over the course of her career, depending on factual events or sudden disaffection, but some constants can be identified, revealing a singular imagination that explores the relationship between film industry and aesthetic purpose of filmmaking. Duras as a writer and filmmaker constantly shifts the aesthetic judgement to the level of ideological judgement, attacking for instance the reception of Anglo-Saxon cinema. By comparing the extreme diversity of her statements, this article aims to understand what Anglo-Saxon cinema means, in the Durassian imagination.

The article examines the online reception of The Lover, the translation of Marguerite Duras’ novel L’Amant. The horizon of expectation is thus determined by the experience of the film, but also by the aesthetic and commercial presentation of the novel. The choices of visual images and blurbs displayed on the cover of the English editions highlight the erotic aspect of the text.

The three versions of Aurelia Steiner's story tell the same tragic tale in incompatible variations. The interplay between the narratives and the stylistic work encourage the emergence of an unconscious text. Through the scriptural space in which she becomes the negation of herself, Aurelia Steiner embodies the paradox of an unlived primal scene, the particularity of which lies in the fact that she never intimately knew her parents, who disappeared in the death camps.

Sensorial Memories of the Colonial Space in the Films of Marguerite Duras

This article argues that Marguerite Duras’ films evoke memories of the colonised Orient through fragments of sonic, haptic and olfactic events, which happen, seemingly randomly, in the liminal spaces of Duras’ filmic representation of place. In these interstitial gaps, the possibility of cultural hybridity is opened while the assumed or imposed hierarchy between the colonised and coloniser’s space is deconstructed. Through a detailed analysis of Duras’ films, this article unearthes the fragments of these buried sensorial memories of intercultural contact in the colonial space.

This article deals with a lesser known aspect of the adaptations of Marguerite Duras's novels: the film photonovel, a currently forgotten medium which used to be extremely popular around 1960. The point of departure is a specific novel, Un barrage contre le Pacifique, and the text analyzes how this kind of adaptation is indebted to its new host medium, while also asking questions on the readership of this dramatically low-brow genre. The article also examines Duras's (failed) attempts to give a new visual extension of her work in the field of the photonovel.

This article reads the English and American translations of Le Ravissement de Lol V. Stein undertaken by Eileen Ellenbogen and Richard Seaver as a prolongation of the dynamics of ravissement at work in Duras’s novel. Between capture and abandonment, translation bears witness to the impossibility of achieving an erotic and linguistic fusion with an ever-escaping original story. Beginning with the fate of certain letters in the English-language translations – the absence or expansion of these stylistic elements which are so essential to Duras’s style – the article studies how the translators’ choices affect questions of musicality, identity and eroticism. The differences between the two translations are demonstrated through a study of their efforts to deal with the repetitions and the rhythm of Duras’s prose. Translation, which must make choices amidst the source text’s ambivalence, can be read as a form of subjective and necessarily incomplete reappropriation: a renewed expression of desire.

Marguerite Duras's films were profoundly influenced by her literary work, and vice versa. From Nathalie Granger onwards, the narrative device of her texts relied increasingly on cinematographic effects. Although Duras' first three films were adaptations of previously published works, the release of the film Nathalie Granger (1972) preceded, for the first time, the publication in 1973 of a text with the identical title: Nathalie Granger. This precedence of cinematographic staging over literary creation led to a renewal of the Durassian conception of narrative, resulting in the literary transposition of cinematographic techniques such as framing, reiteration and mirror effects, the omnipresence of visual elements, and a particular treatment of space that we call "gigogne space".
