In La Vie tranquille and Les Petits Chevaux de Tarquinia, monotony, initially perceived as dull and sterile, paradoxically reveals a stylistic potential that can be exploited through its polysemy. The most insignificant terms, the flattest formulas, the least elaborate sentences prematurely give rise to a poetic of monotony that sings, first of all, of the disenchantment of life and writing that are still searching for themselves. This first way of writing boredom then raises the question of necessary but impossible distraction. Finally, the monotony is transformed into the musical richness that is the hallmark of the Durassian style.

Christine Letailleur explains the dramaturgical issues that inspired her 2020 staging of L'Éden cinéma, an adaptation of the novel Un barrage contre le Pacifique. More specifically, she discusses the importance of the temporal montage that structures the work, the influence of cinema and the actors' performance, between acted scenes and narratives in the past tense.
