With revolt brewing in a Europe struggling to rebuild itself, Heiner Müller, East German poet, playwright and writer, then persona non grata in his own country, attempted a return to the theatrical scene with an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The play proved controversial and did not bring Heiner Müller out of the wilderness. It is imprinted with the motives dear to its author, and suggests a rather pessimistic vision of the world. The fantasized Scotland in which the tragedy takes place becomes a land of atrocities, where warlords do battle. What are the major differences between the Jacobean and the German versions of the play? How does Müller deal with violence and why? How might we respond to this text fifty years on? These are the questions this article explores.

Shakespeare’s Macbeth and David Greig’s Dunsinane: a Machiavellian perspective

This study aims to show how Machiavelli’s Prince provides a valuable lens for an understanding of Shakespeare’s Macbeth and David Greig’s sequel Dunsinane. Following the logic of Machiavelli in the exposition of the appropriate course of action for acquiring and keeping a new principality, we examine issues of the conquest of power, the importance of military strength, and the qualities required in leaders. In both cases, failure to meet the conditions established by Machiavelli leads to tragedy – a tragedy of damnation for Macbeth and a more ironic tragedy of good intentions in Dunsinane, with Gruach emerging as true leader and the most genuinely Machiavellian character, combining military strength, virtù, patriotism, political astuteness and a capacity to act in harmony with Fortune.
