<title>“If Sleepwalkers are wakened” – Fictional consistence and historical resistance through Lady Macbeth’s figure in Gordon Bottomley’s Gruach and in David Greig’s Dunsinane</title>
      <link>http://www.peren-revues.fr/coupdetheatre/301</link>
<description>The paper examines how two definitively and determinedly historical approaches to Lady Macbeth’s character in a prequel (Gordon Bottomley’s Gruach) and a sequel (David Greig’s Dunsinane), with notably similar techniques still take markedly different turns concerning their attitude towards the Shakespearean play. The approach of the prequel Gruach and the sequel Dunsinane can be said quite similar. Both rely on Shakespeare’s Macbeth in their creation, both consciously involve the Shakespearean universe at their inception and maintain the connection with the early modern tragedy on many levels. Both texts consciously avoid the title character, and feature Lady Macbeth, placing her in the centre of attention and revealing her historical past, her motivations, and her political ambitions. Yet, Comparing the two adaptive approaches will reveal that the characters in the adaptations will emerge with a strikingly different attitude towards the Shakespearean character (Lady Macbeth) and the text they derive from. The paper strives to show how similar mechanisms of adaptation based on historicity can result in disparate modes of compliance and resistance to the character analyses, the canonical position and the reliability of the origin-play, Macbeth. </description>
