      <link>http://www.peren-revues.fr/coupdetheatre/330</link>
With revolt brewing in a Europe struggling to rebuild itself, Heiner Müller, East German poet, playwright and writer, then persona non grata in his own country, attempted a return to the theatrical scene with an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The play proved controversial and did not bring Heiner Müller out of the wilderness. It is imprinted with the motives dear to its author, and suggests a rather pessimistic vision of the world. The fantasized Scotland in which the tragedy takes place becomes a land of atrocities, where warlords do battle. What are the major differences between the Jacobean and the German versions of the play? How does Müller deal with violence and why? How might we respond to this text fifty years on? These are the questions this article explores. </description>
