In 1990, just after the fall of communism in Romania, director Silviu Purcarete staged, in a province theatre (Craiova), a production that was to make a major breakthrough in Western Europe: Ubu Rex With Scenes from Macbeth, after Jarry and Shakespeare. The adaptation reinforced Jarry’s parodic use of Macbeth by embedding scenes from Shakespeare’s tragedy as a play-within-the-play set during the interval of Ubu Rex and entitled The Mousetrap. The double reference to Shakespeare and to Jarry resulted in a grotesque reading of Romania’s communist past, as Pa (Ilie Gheorghe) and Ma Ubu (Valer Dellakeza, cross-dressed) recalled to the Romanian audience Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife, who had been killed during the 1989 events. This article will set out to investigate the rewriting strategies which enable the director to propose a critique of the totalitarian power.
