Focusing on Punchdrunk’s The Drowned Man: A Hollywood Fable (2013-14), the discussion addresses the central themes of space and the aesthetics of intimacy in immersive performance; the place of the text in immersive theatre; and the types of audience attracted to Punchdrunk work specifically, and immersive work more broadly. It highlights the significance of “the cinematic” to Punchdrunk’s unique approach and the way this impacts audience experience and interpretation. S’appuyant sur l’histoire de Punchdrunk et ses procédés artistiques présentés dans l’ouvrage séminal The Punchdrunk Encyclopaedia (Machon et Punchdrunk 2019), cet article explore la pratique de cette compagnie pionnière des performances immersives en Grande Bretagne. Le propos, centré sur le spectacle The Drowned Man: A Hollywood Fable (2013-14), aborde les thèmes centraux de l’espace et de l’esthétique intimiste dans l’immersif, la place du texte dans ce théâtre ainsi que le type de public qu’attire le travail de Punchdrunk en particulier et, plus largement, les spectacles immersifs.
