Immersive Shakespeares: Dive into Suspense and Macabre

While Shakespeare’s plays are of course not the only reference in immersive theatre, they have particularly interested immersive theatre over the recent years. Triggering new perspectives of scenography and interpretation, immersion has proved to be a way for companies to reimagine Shakespeare’s world while keeping the seventeenth-century language alive and “authentic.” Quite blatantly, the productions tend to indicate that tragedies, particularly Macbeth, Hamlet or Romeo and Juliet, are more regularly explored. Why are these plays more fashionable than others? What are the conventions requested for these theatrical performances? Are these often-ephemeral installations an efficient way to approach Shakespeare’s theatre, both structurally and aesthetically? With the help of the archives of the companies, this paper tries to account for the assets of immersive productions in Shakespearean adaptation today.

Prologue. Looking Through a Punchdrunk Lens into the Immersive World of The Drowned Man: A Hollywood Fable

Drawing on definitive accounts of history and process presented in The Punchdrunk Encyclopaedia (Machon with Punchdrunk 2019), this article surveys the practice of Punchdrunk, pioneers of immersive performance in Britain. Focusing on Punchdrunk’s The Drowned Man: A Hollywood Fable (2013-14), the discussion addresses the central themes of space and the aesthetics of intimacy in immersive performance; the place of the text in immersive theatre; and the types of audience attracted to Punchdrunk work specifically, and immersive work more broadly. It highlights the significance of “the cinematic” to Punchdrunk’s unique approach and the way this impacts audience experience and interpretation.
