<title>The Politics of Participation in Immersive Theatre and Participatory Art. The Spectatorship Between Role Reversal and Narcissistic Self-Exploitation</title>
      <link>http://www.peren-revues.fr/coupdetheatre/500</link>
<description>This article examines the ambiguities and contradictions that may result from the spectator’s involvement in participatory and immersive performances. Although audience participation is not a recent aesthetic concern, the collaborative practice has become an ever-increasing tendency that requires a new understanding and critical approach. The interaction with the performers and the reversal of roles does not always succeed in making the spectator an independent agent. As this paper will demonstrate by analysing the oscillation of spectatorship between a sense of community and narcissistic participation, the promise of temporary immersion in a new different reality is not a guarantee of democratic participation and the emancipation of the spectator. In some cases, the increasing attention to the aesthetic of immersion and participation may provoke a capitulation to “presentness,” with the risk of falling within the pitfall of a cynical market of presentism and narcissistic self-exploitation at the expense of the overall performance aesthetic value. </description>
