Performing Gender, Sexual and Racial Dynamics on the US Stage

This volume means to articulate contemporary performance with the dynamics of gender, sexuality and racial productions. It confronts the politics of representation by combining plural approaches of minoritized groups to hear out a multitude of voices fracturing hegemonic oppressive constructions. The contributors explore a wide range of forms and themes that yield complex performances of what it can mean to crisscross identities and identifications in novel manners. From theater history (staging of US playwrights in France or Armenian documentary theater in New York City) to the deciphering of the effects of Black queer rap through lyrics, videos and social media by way of the traditional stage, like improv theater and queer theater. It becomes clear that a dynamic politics of representation can only emerge from a transdisciplinary approach, as in this volume with the conceptual hybridizing of philosophy, history, sociology, politics, media studies and, of course, theater and performance studies. Included in this issue, two interviews—one with a major US theater scholar, the other with an emerging theater maker—prolong how theater has and continues to produce confluences of experiences through personal, intimate and expert voices. The play published here for the first time enriches greatly the meaning of contemporary drama through a metatheatrical voyage through queer lives. Finally, the publication of the RADAC Master’s Prize provides an apt afterword by decentering the issue and by taking us into the deeply socially-conscious world of Edward Bond.

Black America in the Repertoire of Jean-Marie Serreau: Edward Albee, Adrienne Kennedy, and the Theatre of the Absurd’s Role in the Decolonization of the Stage

As debates about the decolonization of theatre come to the fore in the post-pandemic world, in France, scholars are turning increasingly to director, Jean-Marie Serreau (1915-1973). I explore the only US plays in his repertoire: Adrienne Kennedy’s Funnyhouse of a Negro (1964) and Edward Albee’s The Death of Bessie Smith (1959). I argue, with the help of the archives, that these productions cannot be assimilated neatly into Serreau’s work on Francophone Négritude writers or the anti-racist avant-garde of the Black Arts Movement in the United States of the 1960s. Rather these productions encapsulate a negative universalism that reflects the director’s interest in the Theatre of the Absurd. This aesthetic is mobilized in the service of highlighting the intersectional struggles of Black women.

Democratic Rhetorics and Anti-Black Realities in US Improv Comedy

Improvisational theater and democratic political practice share the assumption of a universal, Humanist egalitarianism. However, improv’s overwhelmingly white demography and recurring instances of on-stage anti-Blackness suggest there are specifically anti-Black modes of exclusion that cannot be grasped within this idealist framework. The essay recognizes the urgency of a more profound and structural theoritization and argues in the Afropessimist tradition that anti-Blackness is structurally constitutive of modern Human subjectivity, which is required for egalitarian play in improv as well as political participation. It also addresses the (un)conscious and embodied structures of feeling that govern the white, intuitive decision-making so essential to the performances and practices of improv and democracy. Engaging with three accounts of anti-Black instances on the improv stage, the essay zooms in on the racial epistemological and affective ground for Humanist intuition, reveals the shortcomings of concepts like “stereotype” or “misrepresentation”, and suggests different routes for analyzing the presence of (anti-)Blackness in improvised performance in and against the dehumanizing paradigm of modernity. Analyzing improv as a pars pro toto case study, this essay reaches far beyond its immediate object by addressing its core political assumptions, questioning the liberal belief system of teleological and hopeful improvement of (and naming its complicity in) the anti-Black condition in which Western subjects and non-subjects continue to exist.

Postmemorial Dramaturgy of the Armenian Catastrophe: The Armenian Question

This article presents a pioneering analysis of theatrical representations of the Armenian Catastrophe, applying Marianne Hirsch’s postmemory theories. It unveils the intricate connection between generational memory transmission and the dramatic structure of The Armenian Question, a two-act documentary courtroom drama co-written by Armenian-American director Anna Antaramian. Through a formal analysis of the script, supplemented by insights from correspondences with Antaramian and the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America, archival research, and play reviews, this study reveals how The Armenian Question translates real-life survivor interviews, the co-writer’s personal history, emotional responses, and processes of imaginative remembrance, into its documentary framework. It identifies dramaturgical elements that illustrate Hirsch’s concept of postmemory and demonstrates how theatre effectively communicates traumatic narratives of the past to the audience. This research deepens the understanding of traumatic events for both American and Armenian audiences, offering a more nuanced and subjective perspective. By bridging theory with practical insights, it contributes to the broader discourse on postmemory, trauma representation, and the transformative potential of theatre to engage with and reflect upon the legacies of collective suffering.

“Cause Not Enough Niggas Rap and Be Gay”: Redefining Black Queer Masculinities Through Intersectional Dynamics and Performativity in Contemporary Rap

This paper addresses several elements to be found in hip hop culture regarding the antinormative performativity of Black masculinity/-ies by African American LGBTQ+ rappers. It focuses on the emancipative catharsis at the center of much of hip hop culture. With the examples of rappers Kevin Abstract, Lil Nas X and singer Franck Ocean, I explore the queer intersectional position of U.S. hip hop queer music and probe the LGBTQ+ dynamics that have come into the spotlight. Through their music videos, their onstage performances, and the very content of their lyrics, I analyze both form and message to assess their impact on their audience. In this respect, the interpretation of YouTube “Reaction” videos is a precious measure of the reception of these messages by people of African American descent. These performances and responses are addressed as phenomena, namely as objects reflecting the emancipative goals of the performers in their decisive relation to their audience.

Focusing on three skits from their shows Fierce Love (1991) and Dark Fruit (1992), this article examines the work of San Francisco-based troupe Pomo Afro Homos, to highlight a double exclusion: on the one hand, the homophobia the performers suffer within their black communities, and on the other, the racism they are confronted to in gay environments. In addition to these, effeminacy takes the exclusion even further, reserving them only supporting roles in blockbusters such as Angels in America (1991/1992) and La Cage aux Folles (1983). The creations of Pomo Afro Homos comment on the failure of theater to pursue an inclusive role, like the ballroom that these two plays constantly evoke.

This article aims at defining queer performance in its specificity in order to give an account of its political efficiency. To do so, I rely on two queer aesthetic theories, namely Muñoz’s disidentification and Lorenz’s radical drag, in order to show that queer performances are political experiences to the extent that they are also ethical: they want to play with the limits of norms which define identities. This result is taken a step further to demonstrate that performances act at a foundational level that produces identity norms, that is to say, the deeply normative nature of desire, whereby desires are both products and producers of norms. By addressing our normative affects and seeking to transform them, queer performances can politically resist the norms shaping us. This result is finally understandable thanks to a spinozean-deleuzean conception of desire as a normative force of production, as opposed to a psychoanalytic conception of desire, and leads us to define queer performance as the experimentation on the normative limits of our desires, and queer as this desire-other of norms.

What does it take for a canonic dramatist known for his plays for adults to suddenly decide to write for a small theatre company touring in British schools? Borrowing tools from the Cultural Studies as well as sociology of literature, this master’s thesis depicts what took place for Edward Bond politically and dramatically between 1985 and 1995. It is argued the historical situation has encouraged him to change his career path working for children’s theatre, even though this genre is often categorised as subliterature by literary critics. This work addresses various elements of the political, philosophical and dramaturgical theory that Edward Bond has developed throughout the years to severely criticise and categorically reject modern British adults’ theatre. Margaret Thatcher’s public policies regarding arts and education are largely described and analysed, since this political context favoured both the dramatist ceasing his collaboration with national theatres and the apparition of the Theatre in Education movement in 1965, in the wake of the New Education theories of the interwar period. This historiographical master’s thesis tries to describe Edward Bond’s shiftings across the British theatre field, which underwent deep and lasting mutations at the end of the last century. It appears that the collaborations between Edward Bond and Theatre in Education companies are the result of a common theatrical struggle against the ideology that produces liberalism, and in favour of the emancipation of children.
