Promoters of the imagination over the real, the surrealists envisioned a dwelling that was a figure of poetry and therefore could not exist in the real world. Through their imaginary constructions, they nevertheless offered an architectural horizon that was antithetical to modernism. Their approach to architecture was both dreamlike and organic. They enriched the architectural thought of the time by resorting to myth, the sacred, the irrational, the grotesque, spontaneity. They also strove to establish an architectural counter-tradition that would bring out of the shadows architectural antecedents that were anathema to functionalist rhetoric and championed the work of self-taught artists who decorated their living spaces. The mineral delirium of Ferdinand Cheval and the organic forms of Art Nouveau assumed a central place in this counter-history which revived ornament and fostered the architecture-sculpture movement, influencing the work of atypical creators such as Etienne-Martin, Asger Jorn, Jean Tinguely, Niki de Saint Phalle, and even Jean-Luc Johannet.

L’œil ailé. Michel Nedjar : cinéaste-collectionneur-plasticien

The film Ailes (1979) tallies with an experience, maybe not original, but essential and meaningful according to its description by its author, Michel Nedjar. Our analysis of this film is organized around different of its components, that intervene, moreover, in all of the work of Michel Nedjar: filmmaker, visual artist but also researcher of outsider art (important contributor to the collection of L’Aracine now preserved at museum of LaM). Our aim is to highlighting the qualities of an eye (the author’s eye, that of an artist-collector) that presupposes this work, hypothesizing that this eye would be reflected in a privileged way in Ailes, thanks to the medium of cinematography. This eye is singularly mobile, indifferent to the boundaries between the artistic fields, furthermore looks like that of modern collectors described by Walter Benjamin – and of them Benjamin is one, in view of his « Talk about Book Collecting ».
