This study of two little-known pieces by Man Ray seeks to apprehend why and how they would be the bearers of an “absolute” radicality. These two almost identical black works from 1929 and 1930 have the peculiarity of being both monochromes and photographs.Their problematic status will be examined in terms of conception, realization-production and distribution. Conceptually, these pieces are to be seen as much as read: a “text” inherent to the monochrome plastic proposition plays a decisive role. From a poetic stand point, their realization could seem like a technical failure, thus producing a literally black photograph. In terms of distribution, these pieces personally addressed - to Louis Aragon, to Robert Desnos - are initially private works, which may explain their very late public revelation (around 1989). In any case, with these two photographs, Man Ray, perhaps unknowingly, invents a new photographic genre: the photographic monochrome or monochromophotography.
