This study aims to revisit the emergence of Richard Schechner’s Performance Theories. Influenced by the social sciences, particularly anthropology, he began developing new theories on performance in the 1960s. How did Schechner’s career as a teacher, director, researcher, creator, and editor influence the evolution of this field of study ? His encounters, travels, artistic and intellectual collaborations, the creation of a Performance Studies department all contributed to nurture and promote this discipline.

This paper reexplores the polysemous concept of « performance » in the field of performance studies in France and questions the way Christian Biet, one of the most distinguished Frenc academics, draws on Richard Schechner’s theories. In a second time, this dissertation focuses on performance as a particular form of art and aims to highlight two different conceptions of the anti-mimesis and anti-theatre in the performances of 1950s-1970s. This article finally proposes to reintroduce a perspective rooted in “embodied knowledge,” a notion absent from Biet’s theoretical framework but essential to Schechner’s thought.

Rather than a simple case of unilateral influence, the relationship between Jerzy Grotowski and Richard Schechner reveals a dynamic of intellectual, artistic, aesthetic and terminological co-construction, which had a profound impact on the emergence of performance studies and redefined the boundaries of theatre at the turn of the 1970s. While Schechner relied on Grotowski’s work to develop and legitimise his theories of environmental theatre and performance, Grotowski, in turn, gradually incorporated certain tools, concepts and methodological orientations from this emerging field into his own practice. The result of this encounter is a fertile porosity between theatre and performance, between presentation and transformation, between form and process. Far from disqualifying theatre, this shared trajectory invites us to rethink it not as a fixed form, but as a language continually subject to reconfiguration. And if discourses of rupture have sometimes obscured this continuity, Grotowski’s own artistic path—even in its most experimental phases—suggests that, even when he appeared to radically depart from it, theatre remained, as it were, a latent presence: an indelible imprint within his work. Jerzy Grotowski, Richard Schechner, theatricality, performance studies, circulation.
