The negative connotations associated with the adjective "theatrical" have served contradictory aesthetic perspectives towards the mid-20th century. M. Fried used it to qualify the literal presence of the object in minimalist sculpture in a situation including the beholder, which then undermines the autonomy of the work; whereas in the New York experimental performance scene of the 1960s, this relational dimension is seen as a key to nontheatrical performances that discard the actor’s virtuosity as much as the authority of a stable script over the performance.Far from leaning towards one of these definitions of theatre in order to negatively delineate alternative practices, this article extends R. Schechner’s conception of happenings as "postdramatic theatre" (Performance Theory, 1977) to several performers of the early 1960s, thus envisioning, along with H-T. Lehmann, different modes of "renunciation of the traditions of dramatic form" through the suspension of its norms. Analyses of scripts by Jackson Mac Low, Simone Forti and of historical performances by Yoko Ono shall serve to highlight the persistence of symbolization. These apparatuses, in their articulation of several places, spur us to consider performative practices from a processual perspective – especially if one wishes to highlight the reconfigurations inherent in ceaselessly shifting collective formation – and to eventually assume their pantextuality, which makes them more akin to the poetic theatre of Gertrude Stein than to Antonin Artaud’s rejection of logocentrism.

This article examines one very important common place of the american art history of the early 1960’s : the New York social networks of happening (1959-1966) were fierce opponents to theatre. Going against this prejudice, we have chosen to enlighten the very motley collection of theatrophiliac discourses engaged by the artists of this network. In order to grasp the complex relations of the artists to the model of theater, we first examine the very diverses appropriations of the programs of John Cage, Jackson Pollock and Antonin Artaud - three figures who motivated a new sense of theater among the American artists of happenings. In a second time, we try to identify the general features of the different theatrophiliac positions of the New York network. Through this binocular, we delineate the image of an other theater : a theater of artists that feeds itself from the popular forms of the american theater, and more generally of the products of cultural industry, and that repel as far as possible the institutional field of theater - Broadway or its margins.
