Emerging in the 1990s, French conceptual dance maintains a close dialogue with the legacy of the North American avant-garde of the 1950s-1970s, particularly that of performance art and postmodern dance. Based on the phenomena of choreographic revival and quotation, this contribution examines how pioneering artists such as Jérôme Bel and Alain Buffard have challenged the disciplinary frameworks of dance and developed a critical relationship with the choreographic medium, focusing on the concept and the creative process. The analysis of Alain Buffard’s Dispositifs 3.1 (2001) highlights the pivotal role of the choreographer in redefining the issues of representation and spectacularity at the intersection of distinct conceptual generations. Finally, a later generation, embodied in particular by Fanny de Chaillé and Mette Ingvartsen, continues this legacy by reinvesting in an assumed theatricality, while maintaining an active reflection on memory, transmission, and the historicity of gestures, thus contributing to the development of diverse conceptual choreographic practices based on shared genealogies.

… In the 1990-2000 era, the French choreographic field is marked by a movement that is both retrospective and reflective, focusing the attention of artists and institutions on issues of transmission and historicization. The uniqueness of this return lies in its initial impetus by creators who commit, primarily through the process of reinterpretation, to interrogating the history that constitutes them, by revisiting works that preceded them. While the performative turn commits choreographic artists to looking towards visual arts and break free from the theatrical frame to experiment with different forms for (re)presentation, what about the 360° turn of contemporary dance returning to its own history? Does it not take place more within the black box challenging the encounter between those who create and those who observe? The reflection is based on three works: Cour d’honneur by Jérôme Bel, Performeureuses by Hortense Belhôte, and Une autre histoire du théâtre by Fanny de Chaillé. Created between 2013 and 2023, these pieces share the common goal of returning to the past to (re)construct a living theater’s history on stage (whether it be dance, theater, or performance). In essence, shows about the history of live shows. Supporting this body of work that compiles various forms of hybridization (between spectacular conference and narrated exhibition, between audience accounts and performer portraits) and various stories (of theater, dance, and performance), reinterpretation appears as a performative gesture that questions the conditions of its possibility within the show itself and testifies to a return of the (repressed) theatrical on contemporary stages.
