This article seeks to re-examine the relationships between theatre, performance, and representation through Feijoada, created in 2021 by Calixto Neto. Drawing on Afro-Brazilian cultural practices – notably the roda de samba – Feijoada creates a hybrid form that blends performance, music, speech, and cooking, engaging the audience in a collective experience. The performance calls for particular attention to mutual engagement and relational dynamics. By invoking marginalized popular traditions, it challenges modern aesthetic norms and generates a different relationship to spectacle, knowledge, and collective artistic experience. Through the testimonies of Calixto Neto and the reflections of musician Abel Luiz, the article highlights how Feijoada connects theatrical practice with decolonial thought. It shows that theatre, beyond representation, constitutes a unique space in our societies : a space that fosters the coexistence of multiple forms, experiences, and functions. Doing so, Feijoada revives the singularity of theatre and live performance.

Navigating between theatre, performance art, cinema and photography, Jack Smith’s work resists established categories, defying any clear disciplinary assignment. A marginal but profoundly influential figure in the post-WWII New York City avant-garde, Smith serves here as a point of reference to weigh in on the multiple meanings and translations of the term “performance”. This article revisits the theatre/performance divide through the lens of Smith’s singular universe, structured by the poetic recycling of B-movie material and a dramaturgy of accepted fragility, whose artistic and ethical strategy relies on an alliance of ambition and expected failure. Far from rejecting theater and theatricality, Smith is careful not to situate his approach based on disciplinary criteria. His work also questions the symbolic economy of art: how can aesthetic resistance be combined with survival in a world in which market laws prevail? Using the title Wait for Me at the Bottom of the Pool – a manifesto, scenario and poetic shibboleth rolled into one –, the article analyzes how critical reception has attempted to circumscribe Smith’s work, without succeeding in neutralizing its foundational indiscipline. In turn, it highlights the epistemological and political issues at work in the field of performance studies, confronting them with an artist whose legacy extends an invitation to combine theatricality, marginality and the subversive power of the faux.

The negative connotations associated with the adjective "theatrical" have served contradictory aesthetic perspectives towards the mid-20th century. M. Fried used it to qualify the literal presence of the object in minimalist sculpture in a situation including the beholder, which then undermines the autonomy of the work; whereas in the New York experimental performance scene of the 1960s, this relational dimension is seen as a key to nontheatrical performances that discard the actor’s virtuosity as much as the authority of a stable script over the performance.Far from leaning towards one of these definitions of theatre in order to negatively delineate alternative practices, this article extends R. Schechner’s conception of happenings as "postdramatic theatre" (Performance Theory, 1977) to several performers of the early 1960s, thus envisioning, along with H-T. Lehmann, different modes of "renunciation of the traditions of dramatic form" through the suspension of its norms. Analyses of scripts by Jackson Mac Low, Simone Forti and of historical performances by Yoko Ono shall serve to highlight the persistence of symbolization. These apparatuses, in their articulation of several places, spur us to consider performative practices from a processual perspective – especially if one wishes to highlight the reconfigurations inherent in ceaselessly shifting collective formation – and to eventually assume their pantextuality, which makes them more akin to the poetic theatre of Gertrude Stein than to Antonin Artaud’s rejection of logocentrism.

This soundtrack relays Laetita Doat's speech she gave after her performance earlier in the morning at the LaM: a tribute to Michel Nedjar’s work. The dancer's artistic questions about her own performance are just a pretext for sharing an analytical focus on the artist's work from notions of the body image and corporeality. To conclude Michel Nedjar explores Laetitia Doat's proposals. An exchange follows with the audience.
