This article explores the bodily presence and gestures of Ingrid Bergman and Anna Magnani within Italian Neorealism by conducting a comparative analysis of Stromboli (Roberto Rossellini, 1950) and Vulcano (William Dieterle, 1950). Far from the austere minimalist ideal or actor effacement traditionally linked to this cinematic movement, both films fully exploit and reshape the stardom of their leading actresses. Situated at the crossroads of star studies and visual anthropology, this study illustrates how the actress’s body—subjected to the harshness and stimuli of a volcanic environment—develops a "gestures of suffocation" and an experience of trauma-induced shock (attassamento). Through formal devices such as internal framing, anti-naturalistic postures rooted in Hollywood classicism, theater, and painting, the narrative is suspended to give way to a paroxysmal performance. Ultimately, the cinema transcends mere documentary capture to engage the spectator kinesthetically, staging a profound fusion where body and space reciprocally define each other
