In 1950, two volcano-themed films were released simultaneously: Vulcano by William Dieterle and Stromboli by Roberto Rossellini. These films are often associated not for reasons related to cinema history, but for personal reasons: Stromboli marks the beginning of the love affair between Roberto Rossellini and Ingrid Bergman and their artistic collaboration, while Rossellini’s former muse, Anna Magnani, is said to have sought revenge by releasing "her" volcano film after "Terra di Dio," the original title of Stromboli, was intended for her. Stromboli and the scandal of Rossellini and Bergman’s adulterous affair supposedly put a halt to the American star’s career, while Rossellini, directing Bergman, supposedly renounced his neo-realist faith. We propose to view these films as a diptych, focusing on the performances of Bergman and Magnani. It seems to us that in these two films, with their unequal legacies, Magnani and Bergman continue to develop their "naturalness" and "expressiveness," offering images that form a kind of grammar of emotions. Through these two films, more in continuity than in rupture, they test the "eruption" of particularly strong and independent female characters.
