This article studies the series Incidental Gestures by the artist Agnès Geoffray. This set of 16 images is presented in fragmented wall hangings, sometimes intertwined with other series. In each of them, the artist has retouched a visual element, giving trivial photographs a menacing air and vice versa. Through her retouching, she intends to “repair” the images and “restore dignity” to the subjects photographed. The article focuses on the photograph representing the lynching of a black woman, entitled Laura Nelson. Agnès Geoffray removed the rope from which the body was hung, radically transforming the image. Taking into account the historical context of this image as well as recent studies on the practices of image reuse, the article aims to determine the scope of the artist's gesture. Is it possible, and even desirable, to transform a tortured body into a “gesture of gentleness” as stated by Agnès Geoffray who thus intends to “make an act of reparation”? What are the consequences of this retouching on the composition of the image? How does the work engage with the history of lynching and its memory, which is still active today? Finally, what image and art theory does this retouching evoke? The article first focuses on determining the extent of the selection and retouching carried out by the artist in order to measure the shift visible in the work. Secondly, it contextualizes the image from its historical source in order to understand the place given to the history of this lynching in Geoffray’s work. Finally, the article analyzes the way in which curatorial choices extend the effects of retouching to create a new image, in contradiction with its historical source.

This article studies a column published in Libération in August 1993. Writers, philosophers and photographers present their interpretation of happiness. Most of them coincide with an constituted imaginary: summer scenes, vacations, love, family. Among the images, Graciela Iturbide’s « Happiness » catches the eye. It shows a Mixtec girl laughing beside an animal corpse. The photo does not feature any of the motifs traditionally associated with happiness. On the contrary, the photographer shows a Mexican and indigenous reality: the joy of celebration. By analysing the image of Iturbide, we will consider other ways of representing happiness, which destabilise the clichés that are culturally and historically situated in the West.

This article focuses on the study of two periodicals, Pour vous de Tchécoslovaquie (1961–1992) and Soyez les bienvenus en Tchécoslovaquie (1965–1990), published by the Czechoslovak state for tourists in order to promote the country and its products. With their profusion of photographs, these two magazines are part of a vast corpus of images produced by tourism, its industry and the media objects it involves (books, magazines, leaflets, postcards, amateur photographs). Based on this quantitative observation, the article focuses on the ways in which tourism is expressed, both commercially and politically, and on the construction of a visual standard of happiness, to which the traveller’s experience is linked. In a relationship of synecdoche, the immortalised scene of happiness is a sign of a successful trip, and this relationship between image and experience forms the basis of the editorial discourse established in the two periodicals. The magazine is a space for political communication, a showcase for socialist society that presents itself in the most attractive light, both touristic and ideological. But the paper also highlights editorial motifs and codes from the Western magazine press, particularly consumerist ones, where the register of happiness becomes the sign of a possible shared experience of travel. This paper explores the hypothesis that the iconography of tourist happiness presented here, in the context of the Cold War, contributes to the development of a visual continuum between ’East’ and ’West’. Showing happiness serves as a strategy for seducing the readership and as an indissociable political and commercial argument.

Images du bonheur dans Sections of a Happy Moment (2007) et The Algiers’ Sections of a Happy Moment

Sections of a Happy Moment shows an Asian family playing ball at the foot of blocks of flats; in The Algiers’ Sections of a Happy Moment (2008), men give bread to seagulls in flight, from a roof terrace in the Casbah of Algiers. These videos consist of a long succession of still images from the same working process: shots of the spaces are combined with studio representations of the people to give the impression that one and the same moment in the scene has been photographed from a multitude of viewpoints and framings. Both videos consist of a long, slow, looped scrolling of these composite black-and-white images. The combined effect of movement and immobility is underscored by a soundtrack featuring a few notes of piano or guitar. The aim is to define what is meant by the expression "Sections of a Happy Moment". We will consider that the representation of happiness is dependent on the different registers of images to which these works refer, that of family photography and that of surveillance devices. We’ll also consider the architectural context in which these scenes are supposed to take place, and the people who live there. Finally, the rhythm of the videos will be analyzed, considering that it establishes a duration in phase with the temporal regime usually associated with happiness.

Grace can be opposed to gravity, as in the causality of natural rules. If we follow Simone Weil (La Pesanteur et la grâce), gravity is not only physical and physiological, but also intellectual and mental. By inflecting this idea in another perspective, since we will pass from the religious sphere to the aesthetic and artistic sphere, we will focus in this article on the central relationship between grace and gravity, by thinking it in several ways through artistic proposals. We will study these particular moments when a human body seems to free itself from heaviness (in a physical and also symbolic way). In the fluidity of their movement, a jump or a flight certainly have something graceful, but we will try to catch in the air when the notion of direction abolishes itself in a moment of grace, a moment of suspension. Continuing this investigation, we will currently explore the opposition between grace and gravity in order to suggest that grace can happen not from the tearing gravity down, but from its play with suspension.

Starting with the review of the first cases of legal protection in the history of photography, dealing both with the photographed subject and the author of the image, the goal of this study is to show how the criteria that were adopted as early as the 19th century have durably assigned all parties concerned to fixed positions. Post-mortem law in particular, which involves the dignity of the persons represented, has proven to be strong or absent, depending on whether it concerns the powerful or the anonymous, but also the West or the East. The example of the photographs from Syria, mentioned at the end of the article, illustrates how this historically unequal dimension of the law still finds its aesthetic translation in the image itself.
