In La Quatrième Personne du singulier, the playwright Valère Novarina speaks of grace as an event of recognition that sometimes occurs for the actor and the spectator at the time of the theatrical performance. It will be a question of seeing how this Novarinian recognition would be like the encounter with a certain type of knowledge already there but to which we only access occasionally, and which would oscillate between knowledge and non-knowledge. Novarina situates this process of (re) cognition in the field of language, which would be the place of this knowledge which nevertheless, at the same time, would hide it, according to him, by its grammatical, stylistic, or academic artifices. To access this (re) cognition, Novarina therefore proposes as a method to deconstruct language by practicing what he calls a cure for idiocy, in reference to certain practices from negative theology. This other language would then open for those who experience it the possibility of bringing about true speech, which would constitute a state of grace accompanied by joy and plenitude when spectator or actor recognize in it a part of non-knowledge which resists in each and yet founds the need to know something about it. The possibility of this knowledge would proceed in the work of Novarina from putting into practice the principles of the via negativa, that is, from a teaching that awakens the intellect by leading it first on paths of wandering and ignorance. It would be through this putting to the test from which the experience of Novarinian theater results that a grace could come for the spectator – even for the actor – when the latter comes to experience an ignorance that is constitutive and necessary to know everything and, through this quest, to the possibility of wisdom.

Simon Tanguy has been performing this solo in French since 2016. He met Jeanine Durning when he was a student at the sndo in Amsterdam. The performance inging has been shown in many places: theater stages, workshops, classrooms, dance festival, Avignon festival, university meetings. The challenge of this work is to get out of the language by talking without a break, always changing the subject. The text is neither written nor improvised. The act of speaking is very well prepared beforehand. This attempt to get out of the language is doomed to failure. But the persistence of the instruction, that of never remaining silent, creates the performativity of this practice. The performance moves towards a conference a sports bet, a confession, a stand-up. Simon Tanguy, in this paper/article, explains his experience, the strategies given by Jeanine Durning and the artistic issues involved in the work.
