In the field of history and politics, public figures readily attract and crystallise collective resentment, as demonstrated by “monsters” such as Fredegund or Caligula, Napoleon or Mussolini, which various papers have studied in previous issues. Some of these crystallisations would seem to require a more thorough investigation. Just as issue No. 8, in 2019, was devoted to the “tyrants” of late Antiquity such as posterity has represented them, this issue turns to infamy, an eminently malleable concept, and to the way it is argued, expressed and drawn. Interweaving the work of historians, art historians and specialists of literature, the papers, while delving in older periods, focus above all on the French revolution and its inheritance, a context in which the concept of infamy finds itself inescapably tied to republican or antirepublican positions.

In periods of crisis, when whole countries seem adrift without a compass, many thinkers turn to the past to try to get some sense of direction and redefine collective identity. But as French historian Benjamin Stora or Lebanese writer Marwan Chahine recently reminded us, the memory of wars then turns into a war of memories. Even the field of natural history, in the hands of committed Republicans such as Toussenel and Michelet, can lend itself to such strategies; this is even truer of great historical figures. Again and again, Chateaubriand grapples with the figure of “Buonaparte” or “Bonaparte,” an elusive name spelt differently according to the political outlook of pamphlets. A century after Thermidorian propaganda turned them into embodiments of the Terror, Robespierre or Saint-Just were still deeply divisive figures for the Republican party, and effective rallying-cries for their opponents. More than two centuries later, they continue to fuel controversial representations in far-away Japan, from where they reverberate in global culture. Similarly, Chapaev, a Russian hero of the Civil War, has been channelled to represent Russian history under various antagonistic colours. There is nothing so versatile as these figures; yet they successfully harness the past and suggest a possible future when times grow troubled: thus Zola is the enduring model that German opponents to Nazism turned to when in exile, deprived of citizenship and of the means of expressing themselves. The successive depictions of historical figures, far from turning them into statues, show that they are fully alive and kicking.

If Toussaint Louverture is a hero, whose hero is he? Having spearheaded a slaves’ uprising that ultimately gave rise to the Haitian revolution, he was claimed by republicans, by those who fought to abolish slavery, as well as by colonies struggling to shake off European rule. Many nineteenth-century writers saw in him the epitome of humanity’s aspiration to freedom; their republican ideals lead them to consider such a figure, and such a history, in the light of the universal. One century later, at a time when colonies were fighting for independence, Toussaint Louverture became an inspiration for anticolonialism, while the supposedly universal ideal of republicanism now seemed deceitful. The bond between his name and a specifically Caribbean heritage was thereby strengthened; however, this in no way impeded circulation. Quite the contrary, his figure has been used to bolster a sense of common purpose between those who struggle against all kinds of discrimination and imbalance in geopolitical relations.
