      <link>https://www.peren-revues.fr/figures-historiques/737</link>
In his novel, Jean-Jacques Salgon subjects the figure of Toussaint Louverture to a constant interplay between presence and withdrawal, history and fiction, transmission and appropriation. Far from solidifying into a heroic effigy, Toussaint becomes a crossroads, a memorial cluster where spaces, periods and voices overlap. However, the contemporary writer, as he endeavours to circulate Toussaint’s memory, runs the risk of displacing its centre of gravity. What does “inventing” or “reclaiming” mean, when the historical figure at stake is part of a specific colonial and diasporic history while the author is conspicuously not? Is it possible to rewrite a figure from colonial history and not reenact the violence of colonization, however involuntarily, by (mis)appropriating the heritage of another culture? </description>
