      <link>https://www.peren-revues.fr/figures-historiques/768</link>
This paper draws attention to a writer whose novels and essays have been shadowed by those of his younger brother. Of Heinrich and Thomas Mann’s conflicts of opinion, the main one was their diverging views about the man of letters and the role of literature. Heinrich Mann voiced his views through the portrayal of writers who in his opinion stood for something fundamental, the power of literature to grapple with the problems of its time. Interestingly, his models were French: he wrote successively about the contrast between George Sand and Flaubert, about Zola, and about Hugo. In those openly biased biographies, he outlined the path that he wished German authors to tread, turning the lives of great writers into political and literary platforms. </description>
