Or si l’on veut réfléchir à l’image qui s’est forgée de Breton, il faut rappeler l’importance de l’arrière-plan qu’il s’était choisi : Breton a tôt propagé l’image d’un écrivain de café. Pour des raisons pragmatiques autant que symboliques, le café a été la scène et le décor privilégié de ses travaux, et ses détracteurs, en caricaturant ce trait, n’ont fait que renforcer cette image. Depuis lors, elle s’est prêtée aux analyses littéraires et sociopolitiques et, plus prosaïquement, aux récupérations touristiques – faisant subir à la figure d’André Breton le type même de représentation stéréotypée contre lequel le Surréalisme menait un combat féroce. André Breton, preoccupied with his public image and that of the Surrealist movement, worked hard at his own myth, no less than at his associates’. Any attempt at appraising Breton as an icon needs to take into account the backdrop of his choosing: from the start, cafés loomed large in the image that he wished to circulate. For practical as well as symbolic reasons, they were the stage and setting of his work, and his critics, by caricaturing this trait, only strengthened the association.
