Quality, quantity and beyond: The semantic development of favorable attributes

Several French and Hebrew adjectives denote favorable qualities as well as upscaling quantification for example (bon ‘good’, beau ‘beautiful’, honorable ‘honorable’, digne ‘worthy’, ‘respectable’) salaire ‘salary’ and their Hebrew counterparts. Yet, only French bon and its Hebrew counterpart tov continued to develop further meanings and functions. The first is an intensifier, as in une bonne demi‑heure ‘a good half an hour’, which does not refer to an actual quality or size. Rather, it clearly describes a subjective speaker’s assessment of a significant amount of time extending beyond the frame indicated. A later meaning which both bon and tov developed is that of a discourse marker, as in Bon, allons‑y à pied ‘well, let’s go on foot’, or Bo’u nelex lesham kodem. Tov ‘Let’s go there first. Ok’, where they denote approval or acceptance. Other discourse functions attributed to bon and tov mark the beginning and the end of a topic and shifts between episodes. Based on corpora, the article aims to demonstrate that the present‑day polysemy observed in the two adjectives is a result of tendencies of (inter)subjectification (Traugott 2010, Narrog 2017), which motivated the functions of intensification and discourse marking and will describe the type of constructionalization underlining the various stages of development of the adjectives and in particular the emergence of the intensifier.

Vocabulary is an extremely important indicator of language development. In Lebanon, a multilingual country, speech therapists still lack to this day the necessary tools, adapted and calibrated, to bilingual children aged less than 3 years old. For this reason, a project was launched in order to adapt the long version of the parental questionnaire « MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories : words and gestures » or CDI-I (Fenson et al., 1993) in three languages (Arabic, French and English). In this study, the vocabulary of 112 bilingual Lebanese children aged 8 to 16 months was analyzed. No statistically significant differences in word numbers were found between girls and boys in comprehension and in production. In addition, child’s birth order did not seem to affect vocabulary growth. Furthermore, the analysis showed that the category “social words” is the most developed at this age (8 to 16 months) in comprehension and production. Finally, the analysis of vocabulary confirmed that language exposure plays an important role for the development of lexicons in different languages.

The morphology of rival -ion, -age and -

French -ion, -age and -ment suffixations have been extensively studied as rivals in the construction of event nouns from verbs. In order to shed light on some of the constraints that allow them to coexist, we focus on the morphology of the bases they select. Our results show that -ion, -age and ‑ment, the most productive deverbal nominalization schemas in French, occupy distinct morphological niches in that they display strong preferences that generally do not overlap when they select denominal and deadjectival verbs (suffixed bases for -ion, converted bases for -age and prefixed bases for -ment).

The syntax and compositional semantics of English ONE

In this paper, I analyse the syntax and compositional semantics of the unity cardinal one in English. I argue that the three different uses of one, namely as a determiner, as a DP pronoun and as a prosortal can be accounted for with a single, monosemic analysis. It will be argued that an NP-ellipsis account is not able to provide a unified account of the major uses. However, it will be argued that anaphoric uses of one always involve predicate anaphora. Therefore, a variable-free semantics will be adopted, and it will be shown that in such a framework, one can indeed provide a uniform account for all three uses, using type-shifting operations and Skolem-functions.
