This article focuses on the profound ambivalence which is for Beauvoir inherent in the notion of spirituality. An ambiguity also arises from the novels Anne, ou quand prime le spirituel (1935/1979) and Le Sang des autres (1945). Spirituality is a constituting element in Beauvoir’s fictional discourse in general, and in these novels in particular. Her discourse is caracterized by its position between « a pure philosophy » on the one hand and fiction on the other. With reference to some of the phenomenological theories of Mikhaïl Bakhtin, which treat the aesthetics of the novel, I argue that narratological as well as phenomenological structures in these two novels are distinctive for the poetics of the narrative identities. It is all the time a question of choice ; these two novels conceptualize the act of choosing as a condition to delimite being and nothingness for the protagonists. This article shows the importance of accepting a moral of ambiguity, which seems to be point of divergence for the protagonists. The varying levels of accepting ambiguity is what caracterizes the « becoming » in these works.

In this article the author reconsiders the husserlian conception of intentionality within the framework of immanence and transcendence. Beginning with an analysis of the transmission of the concept of intentionality from Brentano to Husserl, the author tries to show in which way the following “transcendental turn” generates different understandings of immanence and transcendence. It will thus turn out that only a consideration of the interdependency between these different understandings of immanence and transcendence will give access to a truly phenomenological understanding of intentionality. The subsequent analysis of Husserl’s reflections on immanent and pre-immanent time consciousness will then furnish new understandings of immanence and transcendence that will complicate the mentioned interdependency between these two.
