How is knowledge created? Can emotions emerging from a body in motion – and blended with an abundance of sensory perceptions and cognitive representations – enrich the practice of ethnographic fieldwork? This article aims to shed light on the unwavering link between the adoption of a sensory approach to our research environments, the emotions ensuing from this embodied encounter, and the emergence of new forms of action and knowledge during fieldwork. In order to do this, I will focus on a rare moment in the investigation, namely an improvised three-kilometer walk that I did during my first ethnographic research in the Galilee between the “Arab” city of Nazareth and the “Jewish” city of Nof HaGalil. The sensorimotor and emotional disruption caused by this walk caused cognitive reverberations that allowed me to question my own practices of bodily immersion in space, and to consider some aspects of my research in a new light.

With the presentation of a research in progress, a young Ph.D.-student wonders about the goals of these and the bonds which link it with our daily life, despite the chronological, geographical and methodological variables. Arnaud Quertinmont, whose topic is chapels’ equipment of meroitic necropolises (Sudan), aims to contribute to the knowledge of a still relatively unknown civilization, and in particular to its funerary practices. Examples from the catalogue of his research illustrate the interest of all the objects, including the less spectacular.
