Aulus Cornelius Celsus, an encyclopaedist from the first century A.D., is the author of the De Medicina (On Medicine). Based notably on the Hippocratic Corpus which deals already with the dramatic dimension of the medical art, Celsus adapts this Greek heritage to his Roman readers using the original figure of the medicus histrio. Borrowing this latter word from the dramatic vocabulary of his time, Celsus opposes to the ideal practitioner a countermodel that his readers can easily imagine.
