The aim of this article is to illustrate the political dynamics at work where gender is concerned in the audio-visual translations of the series SATC and UB. The analysis of the French dubbing and subtitles on offer for these series highlights two forms of betrayal of the feminist discourse in the two series. The article shows how the French translation results in both a devaluation of the intellectual qualities and professional skills of the female characters and, at the same time, questions the vision of feminine sexuality as the means for feminists to recapture power.

The aim of this paper is to explore some of the issues concerning the two Italian translations (A. Zevi, 1947; S. C. Perroni, 2015) of the incipit to L’Étranger (1942) by Albert Camus. Based on a stylistic analysis of the novel’s opening paragraphs and on a comparative study of the Italian translators’ choices, the article highlights the difficult position in which translators are placed when tackling a text that is as stylistically complex as apparently elementary on the linguistic level, therefore demanding more than a mere recoding in terms of language. The investigation even of such a short textual excerpt exposes the emergency of three « tendances déformantes » (Berman, 1991) in the process of translation, which have led to a somewhat flawed transmission into Italian of the original character-narrator’s defining feature: his étrangeté.
