      <link>https://www.peren-revues.fr/mosaique/1903</link>
Among the few pictures of Chinese modernist artists in France during the Minguo era (1912-1949), one photograph shows Liu Haisu (1896-1994) posing with Albert Besnard (1849-1934). Though the picture is extensively reproduced in the recent bibliography, it remains problematical and it was never examined as a proper document. Actually, the picture provides key data to understand the several levels of the interaction between artists of both French and Chinese art fields before the war. From its production in Paris in 1930 to its diffusion in China from 1931, the photography reveals some main aspects of Liu Haisu activism and his strategy to prevail in the competition raging in China at the end of the 1920’s and early 1930’s among the avant-garde artists group. Furthermore, this particular picture was used as an instrument by Xu Beihong (1895-1953) to attack Liu Haisu and his whole position in the art field, during a polemic launched in the Shenbao newspaper in November 1932. Compared with some other documents, the picture appears to have partly set the specific sort of style which polarized the protagonists about different social, cultural and artistic matters. </description>
