The author explores the impact of emotions, particularly anger and sadness, on his practice of history through his work on the Crusades. In light of the tragic current events, especially the violence in Palestine, he reflects on how these events reshape his perception of medieval texts, making it harder to maintain the critical distance essential to the historian’s role. He proposes three approaches: using emotions to address the present, rethinking research with a fresh perspective, or accepting temporary silence to better manage emotional impact. This reflection questions the ethics of using emotions in research, emphasizing that they can deepen understanding of past massacres but may also lead to unhealthy opportunism and seeks to reconcile emotional engagement with historical rigor.

The artistic activity in Limoges during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries is mainly known today for its enamelled production. However, the discovery of several manuscripts painted by a Limousin illuminator, called here for the first time the “Master of Catherine Gentille”, highlights the career of a Limousin artist, a place forgotten in the great synthesis written by François Avril and Nicole Reynaud in 1993. The presentation of the artist also raises questions about the artistic and commercial relationships established between workshop paintings and workshop enamels during this period. Indeed, the illuminated productions by the Master of Catherine Gentille show some stylistic and iconographic similarities to enamel works from the same period and give us a new vision of the links established between the two areas of activity in Limoges at the end of the Middle Ages.
