The instruments were first inventoried before being placed in storage because they were considered indispensable to the establishment of an encyclopedic and experimental scientific teaching that the deterioration of the military situation did not allow to be realized. The Maison d'Aiguillon, a private residence transformed into a national warehouse of physics, became an instrumental enclave that participated in the functionalization of the professions of conservation of scientific patrimony. Finally, the Thermidorian Republic redistributed the instruments to the benefit of the École Polytechnique, the most prestigious institution, which was then able to set up an encyclopedic teaching program.

This article studies the evolution of the iconography of the allegory of astronomy and the muse Urania on French clocks from the 18th century to the First Empire. The representations of this topic used by artists and craftsmen had to respect a codified iconography, but this did not prevent particular adaptations according to the tastes and fashions of the period. Its use over such a long period of time is the result of the interest that science aroused in an ever-widening public and the ingenuity of artists in creating original models. It is interesting to understand how artists chose to illustrate this theme according to their own motivations or those of their clients, but always with the intention of satisfying a clientele eager for novelty.

This paper deals with the question of the relations between physics and acoustic in the treaty of Harmonie universelle written by Marin Mersenne. The book is a main source in history of modern science, and the birth of mechanism. Music is an important field of intellectual research for the autor. Mersenne elaborates in the book a method of analysis influenced by principles of the new physics. In this study, we want to explain Mersenne’s scientific project, and analyse his literary strategy. The style of writing is playful and living. He aims to question reality, and explain its meaning to show the reader the beauty of the world.

In order to point out the uselessness of Plato’s intelligible Forms to explain physical phenomena, Aristotle reduces their role as 'models' of sensible objects to 'empty words' and 'poetic metaphors'. This paper aims to show that, inconsistent as it may be within the framework of Aristotelian physics, the Platonic conceptualisation of Forms as causes of the becoming is coherent and reconfigures the explanation of physical and natural phenomena. Plato develops a type of causality that can be called 'paradigmatic' by challenging the boundary between axiological, moral and political issues on the one hand and physical science on the other. The role of physics is to produce the condition of intelligibility of our capacity to act on the sensible, by means of a likely myth and images, and reveals the Platonic refusal to oppose, as Aristotle does, practical, productive knowledge on the one hand and theoretical knowledge on the other hand.

In this paper, we will study the discursive and ethical modalities of faire science in physics by focusing on the opposing staging between two faire science, focusing on scientific vulgarization. To do so, we shall study the lively debates within the scientific community in the subfield of quantum gravity. These debates, opposing string theory theorists on the one hand and the rest of the field on the other hand, deal with questions that cannot be reduced to theoretical aspects internal of physical epistemology. We will see how the debates in question are actualized in discourses so as to bring to light the role of ethos in scientific discourse, even in a field like physics, and the effects of the dramatization of the theoretical conflict on the ethos of each other. We can observe how the “cordist” ethos and faire science relies on an aesthetic, but also concordist or even shamanic imaginary, while the ethos and faire science of their critics are anchored in the ethical and normative imaginary that is hegemonic in the exact sciences.

Since the beginning of his research, Bernard Joly has demonstrated the interest of studying alchemy, particularly in the modern period: although alchemy is a set of false principles and cannot be considered as a science anymore, he has shown that it has an internal coherence and philosophical roots. This work into the rationality of alchemy began with his doctoral thesis, which consisted of a translation and a commentary on Pierre-Jean Fabre's Manuscriptum ad Fridericum, under the supervision of Jean-Paul Dumont, and continued through the publication of articles and books. Some of them are intended to specialist readers, some are signed for an amateur public. In the following pages, we offer the transcript of an interview in which Bernard Joly recounts his career and explains his way of doing research in the history of science.
