Over the years, Tiberius’ departure for Capri has been portrayed in a variety of ways, ranging from a hedonistic asylum to a wistful haven. An examination of the literary posterity serves to both contextualize the narratological appeal of the retreat theme and demonstrate its malleability, especially in light of a modernist focus on the circumstances surrounding access to individual truth. It appears that Tiberius has evolved into the perfect topic for considering the boundaries of the outside view's argument for objectivity. Due in large part to the polyphonic nature of the Emperor and his island, literature has a wide range of opportunities to explore this terrible division between being and the world, especially because of the polyphonic antagonism between the voices of the multitude and the exiled individual.

The prosopopeia of Nature at the end of the first section of the Inquiry into Human Understanding unambiguously states the rejection of the isolated scholar’s life-style, plunged into uncertainty and melancholy and rejected by others. However, Hume himself associates the requirement for precise thought with a necessary retreat that he had to practice to write some of his master works. The balance he advocates between sociability as he understands it in a mundane way on the one hand, and a thorough speculation on the other hand, finds its expression in the intermediate figure of a philosophy that is at the same time easy to understand and accurate in its reasonings. By combining a pleasant manner and an abstruse matter, he intends to instruct society and increase knowledge of human nature. The form of the essay, largely prevalent in his writings after 1740, is thus the expression of a deep reorientation of the Humean philosophical project, rather than a strategy for disseminating his writings. Then Hume leaves retirement and speculation with no practical bearing to exploit the morally useful potentialities of sceptical thought by entering good society.

Home is traditionally associated with retreat, understood as a refuge from the world. The aim of this article is to explore the relationship between home and retreat, without relinquishing the political potential of home as a space of cohabitation. This leads to the definition of a specific retreat that could be reconciled with the transformation of the world. Rejected outside politics, home can positively invest this marginalisation, and become a retreat from which a critique of the world is possible. But by blurring the distinction between the domestic and the political, we run the risk of projecting this duality into politics itself, which would be divided between a sense of action and subversion, and a reactionary or even conservative underside. The passage through a singular type of home, the Wohnprojekte, should make it possible to think about a political meaning of the home that retains a dimension of retreat while opening up a creative and transformative perspective.
