Kitsch, born at the end of the 19th century at the era of technical reproducibility, designates in particular the cheap imitation of art. The kitsch aesthetic is made up of scattered materials and comes in all forms, becoming a playground conducive to hybridity and to alteration. The aesthetic phenomenon of kitsch is thus likely to disintegrate values, such as beauty or the sacred. The ugly representation of the statue of saint Peter in the novel Bouvard et Pécuchet proves it. The undermining of taste that denotes the statue actually seems to materialize in the act of degradation of the statue and in the destruction of its image, echoing the term "brisimage" in French, which originally designated iconoclasm. Our analysis will thus decipher the issues of this kitsch mimesis among the collectors of curiosities Bouvard and Pécuchet, from Flaubert's novel to Colin's adaptation, to finally deal with the judgment of taste.
