This article examines the articulation of Nietzschean genealogy and Horkheimer’s critique of rationality and authority in modernity. It argues that Critical Theory inherits from Nietzsche a crucial tool for demystifying the universal claims of reason, while simultaneously diverging from him regarding the normative status of critique. Where Nietzsche radicalizes genealogy to the point of undermining any emancipatory horizon, Horkheimer re-inscribes the mechanisms of internalized domination within a socio-historical and psychic analysis, attentive to the transformations of advanced capitalism. This shift allows us to conceive of rationality not only as a form of life, but as a systemic apparatus of domination, through the concept of instrumental reason. The challenge, then, is to understand how Critical Theory can draw on the deconstructive power of genealogy without perpetuating its aristocratic and anti-egalitarian implications, while maintaining the possibility of emancipation.

Drawing on the current debate surrounding the concept of “humanism,” this paper aims to examine certain essays published by Horkheimer in the 1930s, in which the program of a critical theory of society provides the foundation for a “new” concept of humanism. With this in mind, it is first important to identify the specific characteristics of Horkheimer’s humanism without neglecting the Marxist roots of his approach.

This article offers a reading of the Orient in Hegel through the conceptualization of a new interpretative paradigm that I identify as “trouble”. Drawing on its contemporary philosophical uses – primarily in Judith Butler – I aim to demonstrate the fecundity of the notion of trouble for the history of philosophy. To this end, I will engage with Hegel’s philosophy on three levels: first, as a paradigmatic case of how the Oriental Renaissance in nineteenth-century European scholarship constituted a factor of trouble for his thought; second, as the site of an original speculative formulation of trouble; and third, as an object of application for trouble understood as a renewed method of reading the classical philosophical canon. As both a theoretical and affective experience, methodological trouble is grounded in a critical bodily reflexivity, opening the way to a new reading of modern texts.

This article discusses the heuristic resources of Charles Taylor's philosophy for thinking about the accompaniment of becoming an individual and of autonomous becoming in general, and in the prism of the couple education/formation and imitation in particular. We build on a reading of Taylor's texts on this theme as well as on an abundant secondary literature on the subject. We present in a synthetic way the Taylorian thought of democratic individualism and of the ideal of authenticity in late modernity (1), we then draw the lineaments of what would be a Taylorian philosophy of education (2) and we see how it is possible to make these two first axes of development converge towards a dialectization of the couple education/training and imitation in a society of individuals (3). Finally, we outline the promises, limits and perspectives of Taylorian thinking for the confrontation of education and training with the challenge of mass individualization.
