Abstract Created in 1996 to take over from the Aerobiology Laboratory of the Pasteur Institute, which had begun collecting and analysing airborne pollen as early as 1984, the Réseau national de surveillance aérobiologique (RNSA) has for nearly thirty years carried out a public service mission characterized by the metrological monitoring of the air's content in biological particles (pollen and fungal spores) that may impact the allergy risk to which the general population is exposed. The coverage of the national territory has rapidly expanded, exceeding 75 active sites in the early 2020s, in addition to a dozen others whose operations were limited to the period of ragweed. A significant amount of work has been done to streamline the location of sensors and standardize their operating methods. The uniqueness of the RNSA compared to foreign networks has been, from the very beginning, to disseminate not only information on the pollen or spore content of the air but also, and especially, a predictive assessment of the allergy risk related to exposure to airborne biological particles. Many other missions have been added over the years. It is largely thanks to the flexibility of its associative status that the network has been able to build and evolve, relying both on social and health demand, on scientific expertise, and on the investment of participants, to the point of becoming a reference at the European level. This only makes its brutal disappearance in the spring of 2025 all the more difficult to understand.

It is well known that the prevalence of allergic diseases in general and pollen allergies in particular has increased dramatically during the past few decades in industrialized countries. Exposure to environmental pollutants may partially account for this rising trend. Air pollutants exert many actions upon aeroallergens: in particular, they may increase the number of allergens inside pollen grains and their ability to be released in the atmosphere, and thus modify their allergenic potential. In addition, some pollutants have a direct or indirect effect upon the individuals: by irritating the airways and skin, the penetration of pollen allergens into the human body can be facilitated. Lastly, the pollen grains may carry on their surfaces various environmental allergens… The aim of the present paper was to relate pollen scores, gaseous (NO2) as well as particular (PM10) pollution, and clinical data in the cities of Lyon and Paris during the long and strong pollution episode of March 2014. The results confirm that pollen (in this case, mainly cypress and poplar) has a strong health impact. The link between pollen and pollutants is harder to assess. But this does not alter the fact that public information must always involve all the environmental data with respect to both pollen and physico-chemical pollution.

The impacts of climate change on aeroallergens and the resulting impacts on allergic diseases have been explored by many authors. Leaving aside the direct, extra-climatic effect of CO2 on plant growth, the key points contained in those publications relate to changes (1) in the timing and length of pollen season, (2) in pollen production and atmospheric pollen concentration, (3) in the allergen content of the pollen grains, and (4) in the spatial distribution of allergenic plants or the dispersion of their pollen. A rather broad consensus emerged on the first two points, as well as on the third one, in the specific instance of birch and ragweed; but there remain many unknowns regarding the fourth point. Theoretically climate change might facilitate the spatial spread of particular plant species to new areas, which become climatically suitable for them. But, in practice, plants are not automatically and certainly not immediately following “their” climate. It is important not to confuse the potential, optimal and “achieved” ecological niches. Simulation is not forecasting: big uncertainties continue to exist and even more so because humans can profoundly alter the natural trend through agricultural or ornamental planting.

Pollens and fungal spores are part of outdoor bio-aerosols, like viruses and bacteria. These particles transported by the wind can cause respiratory allergy according to their allergy potency. To monitor health impact due to these particles, the French aerobiology monitoring network (RNSA) use several tools: a clinical report which summarizes the evolution of symptoms of the patients observed by physicians, a pollen diary on which allergy sufferers can compare the intensity of their symptoms with the pollen concentrations, and the IAS (Health Leading Index) provided by Open Health which allows to follow the evolution of the sales of drugs fighting against allergy. The analysis of the data obtained with these tools confirms the correlation between the presence of outdoor biological particles with a high allergy potency and symptoms, but also allows to compare the symptom intensity from one year to another.

Ragweed is an invasive species very present in France and in many countries in Europe like Hungary for example. An invasive species is an alien living species that becomes an agent of “harmful” disturbance to the native biodiversity of natural or semi-natural ecosystems from which it was established. Its pollen is highly allergenic and just a few grains are enough to trigger allergy symptoms in susceptible individuals. Over 280,000 Rhône-Alpes peoples are potentially allergic to ragweed, according to a study published by ARS in 2014 (Anzivino, 2014). The symptoms experienced by sensitive people are rhinitis, conjunctivitis, tracheitis, and in some cases asthma attacks. The treatment of these pathologies cost 15 million euros (annual public expenses related to ragweed allergy in Rhône-Alpes), and health costs is increasing (Chapgier, 2015). To fight more efficiency against ragweed and reduce health costs, the Rhône-Alpes region has set up ragweed reporting platform in order to mobilize the public and involved everyone in the fight against this invasive species.

In Paris, pollens are listed since 1985, starting from a pollen trap located on the roof of the Pasteur Institute. In order to study the representativeness of this pollen trap, a second one was successively placed at the east (Audubon street) in 2003 and 2004 then in the North-West (Tocqueville street) from 2005 to 2007.The total pollen counts obtained on the Pasteur and Audubon traps have similar profiles: the increases and decreases are found on the two traps; the peaks of concentrations vary in intensity from one trap to another, but are simultaneous. Taxa the most represented on the sites Pasteur and Audubon are the same but their relative importances differ. For Urticaceae, Betula and Castanea, the results obtained on the Pasteur and Audubon traps are equivalent, with close pollen index on the two traps. On the other hand, in 2004, the number of grains of Cupressaceae-Taxaceae collected on Pasteur is 1.5 times more important than on Audubon. For Platanus, there are 3 times more pollens on Audubon than on Pasteur. Lastly, for Poaceae, the results obtained on the two traps are not statistically equivalent over the seasons 2003-2004, with higher pollen counts (18%) on the Audubon trap. For these six taxa, the observation of the daily concentrations obtained on the two traps shows that their profiles are very connected. The global aspects of the two curves are the same, whatever the sensor considered. The dates for the beginning and the end of pollination are often close, and identical on several occasions. The total pollen counts on the Pasteur and Tocqueville traps have similar profiles: the increases and decreases are found on the two traps in a simultaneous way. However, the Pasteur trap tends to over-estimate the concentrations compared to the Tocqueville trap: the total concentrations obtained on Pasteur are higher (12% more) than those of Tocqueville. The observation of the daily concentrations of grains of Cupressaceae-Taxaceae, Urticaceae, Betula, Castanea, Poaceae and Platanus shows that the profiles of the daily concentrations obtained on the two traps, for each of the six taxa studied, are overall very similar. The difference between the starting dates of pollination and those of end of pollination varies, in most of cases, between 0 and 7 days. However, an important peak of concentration of Urticaceae was detected on the Pasteur sensor between the 13th and 16th on April of 2007 whereas the number of grains collected on Tocqueville remained weak. In the same way, on April 23, 2006, a sudden increase in the number of grains of Platanus was observed only on the Tocqueville trap.It is also interesting to compare the differences in allergic risks obtained from the pollen counts of the various traps during these 5 years. It will be noted that in 93% of the cases, the variation of the allergic risk related to the pollen counts of birch between the Pasteur and Audubon sites (2003 and 2004) are lower or equal to 1 index, which is satisfactory. This figure goes up to 96% of the cases for the grasses pollens. Concerning the years 2005 to 2007 (comparison between the Pasteur and Tocqueville sites), in 97% of the cases the difference in index is lower or equal to 1 for pollens of birch whereas that accounts for 95% of the cases for the grasses. The study shows that the cover of the historical trap of the Pasteur Institute is close to the traps located in the east and the north of Paris. There is not any significant difference between the Pasteur and Audubon sites from the point of view of the accounts of pollens. The results obtained on Pasteur are higher of 10% than those obtained on Tocqueville but, just as between Pasteur and Audubon, the principal taxa collected are the same (Urticaceae, Poaceae, Cupressaceae-Taxaceae, Betula, Castanea…) and their order of appearance per quantity of grains of pollen is very close for the two studies. For all taxa with allergic interest, the temporal variations of concentrations are close. It is also the case for Cupressaceae-Taxaceae of which the quantities of grains collected on Pasteur are however 1.5 times higher than on the two other traps. The trap located at Pasteur can be considered as representative of the Parisian area for information on the allergic risk related to the exposure to pollen.
