Formaldehyde is an ubiquitous indoor air pollutant, known to be carcinogenic to humans. Numerous methods of detection have been developed for various applications such as the protection of directly exposed workers at workplace or the control of the emission of construction materials (wood, insulation foams, and resins). However, the quantification of formaldehyde level is far from being easy in comparison with the other indoor air pollutants because of its low concentration (1-100 ppb) and the presence of many chemical interferents. This article is a quick survey of methods that are commercially available or still under development in laboratories. In particular, we will focus on chemical sensors that are developed in the Francis Perrin Laboratory. These sensors, based on solid nanoporous thin films doped with Fluoral-P, allow to achieve a fast trapping and detection (5 min) of formaldehyde over a wide range of the pollutant concentration with a sub-ppb sensitivity. The effect of relevant parameters such as the concentration of the probe molecule, the relative humidity, the temperature and the presence of interference on the properties of the sensor will be described and discussed.

The work achieved in this study consists in analyzing the quality of the air in the capital. LVS pump (Low Volum Sampler) was used for the collection of the samples in the district of Bab El Oued characterized by the presence of a hospital and an incinerator of medical and different other waste as well as a strong density of traffic cars. The aerosols were taken at height of 3 m of the ground in total suspended particulate (TSP) mode. The samples have been analysed by ED-XRF (Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence). The experimental results show that the daily content of TSP is over limit of the target value 50 μg/m3. The TSP are responsible for the transport of toxic heavy metals such as Cd, Pb, Cr and Ni.

This paper is based on a study that has been realised with people living around an industrial area. Every day, each volunteer had to complete a comment card where he had to inform if he smells something, to characterize the odour and the discomfort. The aim being to determine exactly the source of odour nuisances, a tool named ISODOR has been developed. ISODOR method is based on a cartographic representation and requires the calculation of a frequency index defined by the decree of 12th February 2003. This index needs to compare the angle between the observer and the source to wind direction, so the source had to be known. The ISODOR method consists to cross-rule the domain of the study, to suppose the source on a node and to calculate the frequency index for each observer. This operation is repeated for all nodes and the median of the frequency index corresponding to a same node is calculated and represented on a map.An optimisation based on the utilisation of a stationary gaussian model permits to consider the atmospheric dispersion of the odours by a variable exposition angle. Tests done after this modification seem to show an improvement of the results. The interest of ISODOR is underlined with the cartography of the probability that the discomfort index exceeds a threshold supposing two different sources localizations.
