Black carbon, an indicator of urban pollution health effects, is at the heart of adaptation issues as benefits of its control can be felt both at the scale of climate phenomenon and air quality. This element has to do with several notions whose definitions need to be stated again. It sets urban policies at the crossing of climate, air pollution, population health and sustainable development stakes. The CITEPA has made available Mark Tuddenham’s litterature monitoring concerning black carbon, and, more widely, SLFC (Short lived climate forcers).

Assessment of urban pollution by O3, NOx and SO2 and local interactions with weather parameters is conducted in the capital Tunis (Tunisia) between 2003 and 2014. It established the distribution maps of the gaseous pollution and highlights the interactions between ozone and nitrogen oxide concentrations as well as meteorological parameters by a statistical approach using correlation studies and principal component analysis (PCA). Quite high ozone concentrations are reported in the study area (66- 130 ppbv) and their distribution is the opposite of nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide’s (respectively 51-178 ppbv et 1,8-4,4 ppbv). The correlation matrix and the PCA show a high correlation between ozone, temperature and the intensity of solar radiations on one side, and relative air humidity and nitrogen monoxide on the other side. These two groups are anti-correlated. Nitrogen dioxide concentrations seem to be independent of the photochemistry with a limited correlation to the other parameters.

In urban areas, gaseous and particular vehicle emissions during periods of high traffic activity can react under the influence of sunlight to create a variety of products including ozone. Ambient ozone concentration can be relatively high and recommended levels can be reached during a peak period in the suburbs. Therefore, the elevated concentrations of nitrogen oxide NO in the vicinity of motorways with heavy traffic, in combination with the fast chemical reaction between this chemical species and ozone, causes a local depression in the ozone concentration. Due to its large geographical diffusion, ozone represents a problem on a regional scale and is becoming an important component of photochemical air pollution. The local effect on the air chemistry is important from a phototoxic point of view and should be possible to detect by the use of an ozone indicator plant. Sensitive higher plants may be used as indicators of air pollutants effects for studying the occurrence and distribution of air pollutants and their consequences in place and time. The intensity of visible foliar injury evaluated in terms of the percentage of leaf area covered by necrotic lesions, was shown to be mainly related with integrated ozone exposure. We report here results of a urban survey (Communauté Urbaine du Grand Nancy) of ozone concentrations, using the appearence of visible injury of the leaves of a sensitive plant species Nicotiana tabacum cv. Bel-W3, as an indicator of the presence of the pollutant. During the summer months studied, ambient ozone levels exhibited substantial spatial and temporal variations. In June, the meteorological conditions were favourable for the photochemical formation of ozone. The amount of leaf injury in the central urban area was relatively low, white it was higher at the periphery such as Nord-East Nancy, with respect to wind direction sectors, and was tern areas suggesting an altitudinal influence. The percentage of ozone-injured leaves shows a clear trend with the lowest values close to the motorways and in central Nancy compared to residential suburban areas. These effect reflect local NOX emissions and is explained by the reaction between NO and O3 causing a local depression in O3 concentration in the vicinity of the motorways and activity zones. The overall results suggest that the visible foliar responses of tobacco Bel-W3 can be used as a qualitative, but not necessarily as a quantitative indicator of relative ambiant O3 urban air pollution on a generalized temporal or spatial scale.

A study of the air pollution in BTEX and alcanes (heptane, octane, nonane) of the city of Burgas was carried out with dynamic samplings by pollutant accumulation on active charcoal (a preliminary study with static samplings had already been done before this study), to complete the existing data that are very fragmentary and almost nonexistent in the territory of the city. The purpose of sampling multiplication was to map pollutants and their time development in order to allow the modelling of pollution (transmission and broadcasting) and the optimization of a more complete observation network within the framework of the Bulgarian thesis of Madam Naydenova. The results published in this thesis were based on measures carried out between 2000 and 2004 and will be used to defend the thesis, planned for 2007.The collected information (the density of the traffic and the kind of vehicles) corresponds to the 2000-2004 period, but an extrapolation is done for the current period. At the same time the impact was evaluated according to the Bulgarian environmental norms that were in force between 2000 and 2004. These norms were more strict than the European norms (hourly average and annual concentrations) and therefore gave more complete information. The main potential sources of pollutants are: the LUKOIL refinery situated at about 7 km to the North West of the city (average production at about 7 million tons of oil products), two industrial zones to the North and to the South inside the cityʼs territory, the local and transit car traffic to the south Bulgarian Black Sea coast. The preliminary campaign of static samplings in the city of Burgas and its surrounding area confirmed these expectations while showing the weakest pollution of the dwelling neighborhoods (except those close to the refinery) in comparison with the pollution of the zones with high traffic density. We had therefore decided to do measures inside the territory of the city with dynamic samplings by accumulation on active coal to high debit (a litre.min–1), following the Bulgarian analytical norm, having good sensitiveness. The sampling points were placed while taking into account the pollution sources and system of dominant breezes in sea edge. The extraction was done with carbon disulfide and the analysis by coupling GC/MS. The behavior to the evaporation of the components of fuels (refinery and petrol station emissions) and the used sampling and analysis techniques were the same as our BTEX and heptane, octane, nonane study. The obtained results from the dynamic samplings showed a bigger dispersion in comparison with the static samplings, which is logical. There was a correlation between the variations of the concentration in alcanes and BTEX, the alcanes concentrations were at a higher level. There is a relation between human activity and pollution – the observed concentrations were higher on working days than on weekends (particularly on Sundays). The average "dynamic" values confirm the observed tendencies to support the static samplings and at the same time these results allowed a brief mapping (concentration level expressed by variation of the base level for each sample point). This outline allows the following conclusions:-a bigger pollution in zones with high density of the car traffic;-a more substantial pollution in the North than in the South of the city because of the LUKOIL refinery;-a maximal pollution in the center of the city (500 μg.m–3 for BTEX) and a minimal pollution on the Black Sea or the Burgas lake coasts (50 μg.m–3 for BTEX) that show the influence of the opposition between emission and dispersion. These observations were based on the Bulgarian hourly environmental norms for benzene (10 μg.m–3). If we perform an average value of the 47 dynamic samplings, we obtain an average concentration of benzene 14,3 μg.m–3, the reliable values for the samplings were dispersed regularly on weekdays, including weekends. In this way Burgas is on the same pollutant level as other South European cities. The pollution is higher in winter than in summer, despite the bigger summer traffic (the city of Burgas is a tourist center and there is an increased summer transit). In our opinion this is the result of the functioning of the heating installations in the wintertime and of a better dispersion of the pollutants in summertime. These samples were taken between 2001 and 2004. The number of registered cars increases steadily (about 8% per year). This fact did not have an important influence between 2001 and 2004, because the rise in the traffic increase was compensated by a partial renewal of the vehicles with more modern ones.

Towns of Morocco are exposed to a high atmospheric particulate pollution due to automobile traffic, industrialization, but also to soil dusts (in relation with aridity and desert proximity). Monitoring networks and data about air pollution are still rare. The present study is a preliminary work about particulate and heavy metals pollution in the city of Kenitra. Aerosols had been collected with a PM10 sampler (Partisol), a dichotomous sampler (PM2.5 and PM2.5-10 fractions) and a stacked filter unit (Gent type) with a fine fraction (below 2.5 μm) and a coarse fraction. In summer, the average PM10 concentration is near 80 μg/Nm3, above the EEC rules and WHO recommendations, but similar to some other African towns. The ratio PM2.5/PM10 is low (below 0.5), with a seasonal variation in relation with meteorology. The lead and nickel concentrations are also very low, in relation with the use of leaded gasoline and the oldness of many vehicles. This preliminary work reveals high levels of pollution (especially PM10, Pb and Ni) in the town of Kenitra. The major sources are traffic, soil dusts and resuspension of deposited particles. It is necessary to develop monitoring network and sanitary and environmental impact studies in these cities.

It was recorded an irregular trend upward for strong acidity and black smoke average monthly concentrations since 1986-1987. Levels in the working days are higher than those monitored in the week-end and days off, which proves the effect of traffic and industrial activities on air quality. It was not possible to establish any overall correlation liable to express the increase in annual average concentrations. At the most representative stations, the exceedance of guideline values was recorded and concentrations reached values close to the limit. No acute episodes of air pollution were recorded, although the trend patterns monitored show an aggravation of air quality during this period of time. This trend is contrary to the one derived in foreign networks, where strong acidity and black smoke levels have been decreasing in consequence of environmental protection measures put into practice. Carbon monoxyde, nitrogen oxydes and ozone levels measured in 1992 are lower when compared with those monitored in other regions.
