Chemical and mineralogical composition and sources of urban atmospheric particles, specially sulphates- A study at Tours (France)

In order to reconstruct the formation mechanism of the sulphated black crusts found on the tuffeau and stained glass windows of Saint-Gatien Cathedral in Tours, a study was performed on the particulate content of the atmosphere in the town, based on two sampling campaigns that took place during December 1994 and July-August 1995. The Black Carbon (BC) in air was continuously measured by means of an aethalometer. Total suspended particles were sampled both day and night by air filtration through Nuclepore membranes. The analysis of eight filters by Analytical Scanning Electronic Microscopy (ASEM) allowed the classification of particles of more than 1 μm into six categories (marine, terrigenous, mixture of marine and terrigenous, S bearing terrigenous, anthropogenic, biogenic) (+ « undeterminated »).Aethalometry and analysis of filters by X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) indicated S, BC and Na to be the main elements present in the particles of Tours: S in summer, BC and Na in winter. Geochemical calculations show S to be of dual origin, mainly anthropogenic (Sexœss) and, to a lesser extent, marine (Smarine). The unexpected contribution of the marine natural source is confirmed by the high levels of Na, a typical marine element, also measured sporadically on the site. This phenomenon is linked to the arrival of oceanic air masses in low pressure conditions from the south-western sector and is characterised by a significant amount of marine particles in the form of crystals of halite (NaCI) and polyhalite (K2MgCa2(SO4)4,2H2O) containing Smarine· The contribution of the anthropic source is most frequently predominant, particularly in periods of strong atmospheric stability characterised by the absence of wind and in winter, in strongly anticyclonic conditions. Such pollution episodes are characterised by the abundance of anthropogenic particles and Sexcess is present in the form of ammonium sulphates, principally mascagnite ((NH4)2SO4). The BC is emitted primarily by automobiles and, when present, is mainly in the typical form of microsoot particles. Thus, the sulphates deposited on the tuffeau and stained glass windows and accumulating in the areas sheltered from rainwater must be taken into account in determining the mechanism of formation of the gypsum cement of the black crusts.
